    I really feel it is important to share something very special with all of you: Maverick has been here for a few months now and is growing up nicely! The BEST thing about Maverick is his relationship with my son (17 months). They are litter mates for sure. Maverick and Aiden follow each other around, play play play together, nap together, and the most amazing thing is that MAverick is teething and he can bite when he is playing (LOL) but with Aiden NEVER, even one time when Aiden bit him, Maverick whined and licked his face :eek: Of course we taught Aiden NOT to touch the puppy except with NICE touches, and they are SO great about it. Aiden and Maverick are learning from each other too. Both potty training (funny story: We tell Maverick to Pee on the Paper, and mid Diaper Change, Aiden peed on the paper! LOL eww but good try) Aiden is going well on the potty as well) Of course Aidens favorite word FIRST thing in the morning or after being gone is PupPup. lol. Its just amazing to me how MUCH they have bonded. Im sort of Jealous of Aiden because when it comes down to it, Maverick chooses Aiden first EVERY time!!! Is it normal for a puppy to bond SO SO well with a young child? Will MAverick grow out of it? I hope not. Its the most incredible thing to see every day how much they LOVE eachother…GRINS

    I am so happy for your Aiden, I don't think this bond will ever change. I have been told that when dogs choose the one they want to be with most that it is forever. So, it looks like your son is one lucky, blessed kid. Congrats!

    when I read this I'm so happy!!!
    When I was little My parents had a dog and he bonds very much with me. Just the same as you telling!

    I learned so much about dogs when I was that young and I got a very very good friend.

    I think children learn very much from having a dog around.

    Thank you! I am very glad as well, but a little jealous of Aiden!! Hahahaa….GEEZ they are like Twin Toddlers!!! URG...LOL....its great!

    The answer is he will most definetly not grow out of it. Whe I met my husband I remember thinking. I hope he will love me that much some day…..seeing him and his dog together.

    How special for a child to have such a wonderful companion. That kind of bond will teach both of them so much and will serve your son greatly in the years to come.

    Peter Pan for life , that is soooooooo true. Who wants to grow up anyway? What a geat thread, makes my life a little easier to put up with. I will smile for hours over this…....Thanks :D

    The tables will turn at some time. Aiden will choose Maverik as his best friend and comforter.

    My daughter told her Tyler all her best kept secrets. His fur was stained with the tears of childhood angst for many years. The dog always knew everything before us:D. Basenji love is the best therapy out there.:)

    BTW, hows the little bean?? Due date??

    It would be useful to know more about this dog. Has resource guarding been an issue in the past? Has he bitten either you or your wife before? (a real bite, not playful nipping). Or anyone else? A dog that isn't used to children may be fearful of their loudness or quick movements. Perhaps you could do some socialization work with him, e.g. hanging around places where young kids congregate to accustom him to their noise and activity. Obviously not allowing any interaction as you are unsure of his behaviour. Dogs react differently to newborns. In my experience bitches are more likely than dogs to be tolerant, but it is very much the individual dog's reaction that counts. People have been blindsided when their supposedly tolerant and gentle dog turns out to be hostile to a young child. Bottom line, no dog should be left unsupervised around young kids, so in any event you would have to monitor his behaviour carefully once your baby arrives. On a personal note, of the five Basenjis I have owned, two bitches were entirely reliable with kids, the other was tolerant as long as they respected her space. One of the males adored children and was curious about them, the other curious but uncertain and would react to fast movements. I did not trust him and controlled any interaction closely. IMO, he would have bitten had he felt threatened. And kids, especially babies, tend to grab and pinch, ears, tails, whatever. Caution is always the safest route.

    Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

    IMO it is a myth that Basenjis cannot have good manners on a walk. Yes, great if you can do off leash, but when circumstances dictate that a leash is necessary then walking calmly without a lot of drama and pulling should be achievable. Personally I do not like long lines or flex leashes. Or allowing dogs to eat whatever they find on the ground, which can in some cases earn you a trip to the vet or worse. Like most dogs, Basenjis are not overly discriminant about what they will ingest. A short leash and being observant can protect them from unwelcome outcomes. Mental exercise will also go a long way with any dog. But one should have a definite opinion about who is running the show, and it should not be the dog....they are quite willing to take up the position should you abdicate.

    Started peeing in the crate again

    Just thought I'd share an update on this. I removed the blankets from the crate and replaced them with a mattress. We have been strict about her only staying in the crate at night. When we have had accidents I have cleaned up, with a dog urine killing spray, and placed her back in the crate. Everything is progressing smoothly, not had any accidents for over a week now. So it's been a rather quick turnaround, lovely to have her properly crate trained again. Thank you all for sharing advice on the situation.

    I was told, back in 2000, when I brought our daughter Sofia home form the hospital, to let my husband carry her in, and me to come in and immediatly pay attention to our two dogs at the time. That way I was still their mom and the baby (this new screaming thing) hadn't gotten all of me for herself. I spent time with them on the floor, they did a lot of sniffing and once they had sniffed all the new smells out, my husband brought Sofia over for them to smell her too. They did not like her at first, but we made it very clear that she is here to stay, like it or not. I also remember them both freaking out when they heard her cry through the babymonitor, we actually ended up not using it after that. Those two dogs ended up being her best friend and they put up with a lot. We just lost both of those dogs,one in March and one exactly 4 weeks later. But that is a different story. One more thing, when people came over to gush over the new baby, some of our friends actually brought the dogs special treats, they were our first born kids so they deserved attention too. I think that was a really nice touch of our friends to in this time of amazement actually remember Bogus and Lou, and I also think jealousy was kept at a minimum because of the attention they got. Good Luck, bringing a new baby home is so exciting and such a happy time in your lives.
