Do females howl?

Basenji Talk
  • Bdawg, I love those short talkie sounds. Katie does those all the time. I especially love the 2:00 minute mark when Lexi throws herself to the floor, just like a toddler in a temper tantrum!!

Ty has always been a yodeler/howler and rapid tail wagger, but he never acquired the shorter "speech patterns". Katie is the mouthier short speech maker, but only yodels as a greeting to immediate family or to remind of a forgotten treat. She also only wags when extremely excited (ie.."look what I just stole" moments)

Wouldn't feel bad about the behavior of your basenji. I got mine six years ago and he acts a lot like yours. I kennel trained him and when I have company he goes in the kennel till he settles down. When I let him out I just tell people to be still till he checks them all out then he is fine. A lot of times he acts like he is going to attack me if he doesn't get his way vicious snarls and all, but I have learned it is just that an act . He also acted vicious around other dogs but after introducing them properly he gets along great. We have recently got him a new basenji mixed sister to play with, after the snarls and viciousness he loves her very much. I wouldn't be afraid to rehome your basenji, it at least give someone a chance to see what they can do.

I live in N.J. U.S.A. & I adopted my male (5 yr. old ) male basenji for $75.00 from a shelter. You can always try there.. much more affordable

Welcome to the forum. Dogs living together are more likely to fight, and making sure your pup spends time with the other 2 regularly so they bond early will help. But I'd suggest a female. All around, both for your basenji and particularly for the Australian shepherd (who can also be testy with other dogs), it's probably your safer bet. Where are you getting your puppy from? You might find relatives on the board. :)

I was interested to see this post. I have currently 2 B. gals, Tootsie and Peanut. Tootsie by day is a yodeling lunatic, but sleeps like a rock. Peanut, on the other hand is mostly silent, except for an occasional growl when needed, and has been that way for the 4 years we've had her. About 3 or 4 times in the past year, though, we will wake up to the most mournful, creepy howl I've ever heard.. Pea 'sleep howling' I guess you'd call it! It truly sounds a bit "other worldly" and it always makes me hope she isn't having a really bad doggie dream!

@Andrew: As far as diapers go, my breeder recommended this, as basenjis are quick to tear them off and the cost can add up. Buy the smallest size boy's toddler underpants you can find. Cut a hole for the tail. Put a pantyliner in. I bought a 5 pack last year, and since you can custom cut the hole, it stays on a little better. I got the 2T size & had to safety pin it so it wouldn't fall off of Callie, but it was $3 for 5 & well worth it. Thanks so much. I had another friend recommend this as well. Maya still tried to chew them, but it's much easier on the pocket book : )
