Angry Red Rash ???

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Just to let everybody know, that Saba's rash has cleared up beautifully :). We will keep whats left of the cream, for the next B rash, am sure there will be others ;)… We are continuing on with the Omega 3 tablets too. We havent seen any changes to his scurfy coat yet, but I suspect its too early for changes, time will tell, on that one !!!

  • frankee my 3 year old has also recently developed a red rash and blistering on the left side of his groin area and was licking it constantly, not sure what it could be, we put a cone on to prevent him from licking it. will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. not sure if it is a yeast infection or rashe from something else.

Did she always have them or did they start after something/some time? Do antihistamines clear the problem?

We did a biopsy a week into it and it was not cancerous, so waiting for the bump to go away was the only other option. I though surgery would be too intrusive in the nose area. Kiya had to endure two weeks of wearing the cone day and night to prevent her from scratching her nose. She seems to get all kinds of things around her nose, just recently she got bitten by a bee nosing around in the grass and was back into the cone for a week.

@Burma: they said that the vet did do a skin scraping, i dont recall them saying for mites. she eats beneful healthy radiance dry dog food-we thought that could help her skin stuff… You might want to try a better quality food and one without any grains, there are a number of them. And you should check and make sure that she was checked for mites. If you call your Vet they should have it on her records.

If he still wears the same collar and it is the culprit, it will irritate already raw skin and prevent complete healing. I know the holidays are usually tight for everyone, but perhaps finding a (maybe no-so-stylish) collar made of a completely different material and without dyes would stop the cycle. That's what eventually worked for Elvira, my cat. If it is confined to one spot where there an item directly touches the skin on a regular basis, it sounds more like contact dermatitis to me. Any creams may exacerbate the situation. If it was a food allergy, I would expect a more widespread problem. I would suggest, if he wears a cloth or nylon collar, get a natural leather collar with stainless steel loops rather than coated brass. Since colorful nylon and cloth seem to be the rage right now, it may be a little more difficult to find. The payoff is the leather collar will last much longer than cloth or nylon. If it is felt a cream or ointment must be used, break open a Vitamin E capsule and rub the goo on his rash. It is odorless and if Kiya feels she must be Little Miss Nursemaid, the Vitamin E will benefit her as well.
