Bald spot on neck…?

Basenji Talk
  • Hello, all!
I'm new here, so forgive me if this has been covered - but I did a search and couldn't find anything…

I've been noticing a bald spot on Daphne's neck - it's on the front, right where her collar sits - so I'm guessing that it's probably from the collar, right? She is pretty young and wants to chase the neighbors cats, so often she will pull hard against her leash when we go out - would that make sense for the bald spot?
Or, do I need to consider other possibilities? The skin is not irritated. She has bald underarms, as well, but has always been like that - and again, there is usually no irritation. We adopted her from an animal rescue in September, if that makes any difference...

    Advice?
    Thanks!

  • I would guess it is just the collar…

  • How wide is the collar? If it is a narrow one, a wider one might be more gentle on her neck if she pulls alot when you walk.

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

My youngster was losing his fur in patches last winter, I was convinced it was food allergies. My vet said it was likely a contact allergy. Sure enough, homemade organic food didn't help. Since I don't use any chemical household products (no cleaners, rug or room deoderizers, scented candles etc) I was mystified. You need to become a detective to find the problem. In Sunny's case, the problem was a dust allergy: I moved his crate close to a heat vent so he wouldn't be cold! As soon as I moved his crate away from the vent his fur started to grow back. I moved to a house with wood heat this summer and he's been fine this winter.

Zest! loves doing this with the malinois! Always has. (although I would NOT use the word "gentle") Word of caution **With our first malinois, Z got her lower jaw caught on the mali's collar - twice. So now nobody has collars on in my house. ** I also know of a couple of different people who lost dogs due to strangulation this way. Very sad.

If Malaika is lying down and you tickle her tum, she rolls partialy over or lifts her back leg to give better access :D She also loves you to scratch the back of her head, this makes her frown and her lips stretch into a realy long Crocodile grin. I will have to try and get a pic,lol

May want to try a hot oil treatment like VO5. I've heard that helps as well. I'm going to try it on Shadow in a week or so-I like to wait until he gets good and dirty!
