Macpack, that is exactly what I will be doing from here on out, even though I got a new fancy trash can. Who knows, he might not have gotten so sick from trash digging, but I am not willing to take another chance..
Yes helpless is definitely how you feel.. but he is all well, still on antibotic and bland foods, but I am slowly introducing his normal diet, and I bought some probiotics and digestive enzymzes for him to take as well..any thing for a healthy gut..lol
Question
-
Can I send a sample if my dog is not AKC registered yet? Well he is I just don't have the information just yet, the previous owner is having trouble finding the paper work. I have his pedigree and everything. Actually I'm not sure of his registered name either.
-
Yes, you can. They will assign him a number with noreg in front to mean he had no registration. Also, if you know some information about him like his registered name or his parents registered name, you could use Sally's database to find his registration number.
-
Send a sample of what? Where? If it's fanconi testing, I don't remember, but as long as you can get a CPP account, you should be fine. There will be more answers on here soon, but I'm sure they will also need to know the what and where.
If you have the pedigree, you should be able to look up the pups, and then you might recognize yours' name.

What's Sally? and what's the site?
-
Ok so I found salllys, that site is really cool. But it doesn't have a record of his mom Kaya Rain having his litter. The records I have says he was born 10/7/07 and it says she only had one litter in '06. What now?
-
I found 4 dogs that were born in '06, but I don't see a record of the ones from '07. Zande's pedigree search has Kaya Rain on it.

Do you have AKC papers? Where did you get your B from? Have you tried to contact the breeder? Sally picks up new litters and new pups from the stud books and/or from the breeders themselves, however if she is not told that a litter was born and the details, or if no pup from that litter is registered, then the records would not be there…..
-
No I don't have any AKC papers thats my problem. I got him through a private sale from a guy in MA. He got the dog from the breeder who is Juanita….I can't recall her last name I think she's out of PA.
-
You can do lure coursing and agilty/rally, but I don't think you can show.
Am I wrong? -
I found the breeder's name it's Benita Wilkerson. I wanted the AKC # for testing…I would love to get into agility but he's almost 2 with no training.
-
Start him out with a gentle obedience class.
It will help you both bond and give you a place to start re the rally/agility. -
Rally didn't start taking agility classes until she was 6 years old so just because he is almost 2 doesn't mean he can't do agility. Start building a bond with him with some basic training.
What information do you have on the pedigree you were provided? Was it a hand written one or was it printed out? Alot of pedigrees have the name of the dog that the pedigree is for somewhere at the top and then the pedigree, is that how his is?
-
Lisa is right, the more you can get your basenji to look to you, the faster you can get him into the these fun events.

I would have to say that you just need to send in his Fanconi test… as I am going to guess this was a less then responsible breeder.... and since you can test without an AKC number.. I would just do it....
If you have him neutered, you can register him as ILP... here is the AKC link

Oh I thought you had to get into that really early in age. I will def. work with him on that. Has anyone ever heard of Benita Wilkerson? I can't find her anywhere.

I have not heard of her…. sorry.....
And you can do ILP at any age... so go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AND you can start training for agility at any age! There are also lots of nonAKC agility venues out there. They even let mutts (aka all Americans) play.
In my area there are:
http://www.nadac.com/
http://www.usdaa.com/
http://www.k9cpe.com/
http://www.docna.com/that should give you a start in your research. What i'd suggest you do is call to some local training centers, discuss what you want to do (most will make you take an obedience or pre-agility class) and watch your potential trainer teach a class. see if you think their training philosophy is a good fit with you and your dog. you need positive training methods with basenjis in agility. trust me; i know. also, go ahead and get a copy of Control Unleashed available at:
www.cleanrun.com
www.dogwise.com
and Nelson's Really Reliable Recall wouldn't hurt either.
good luck and if you decide to persue agility, feel free to ask me questions. (I'm working on my 3rd competition basenji for agility. The dog in my avatar is Digital my brindlewonderkid who has done wonderful things in many sports, including agility.) -
This info was sent to us from a member of BCOA:
Improved Methodology For FANCONI LINKAGE Tests: FTA Paper / Saliva OptionA new process has been implemented for ordering Fanconi tests that uses saliva rather than blood for sample collection using FTA paper. Dr Johnson may still request blood for some research projects, but in many cases, the FTA paper will satisfy that requirement. The new procedure will also allow you to check the status of your test request online with use of a conformation code that will be emailed to you when the order is placed.
You can now order a test on the internet and pay by credit card. The price the kit and test will be $65 to cover the cost of the kit and mailing.
The test can be ordered from one of two websites:
1- The The Canine Phenome Project website
From the dogs profile page in this site, click Fanconi Test. This will link you directly to the OFA site to order the test kit.
2- The OFA site. [[url]www.offa.org]
Go to the "OFA DNA Testing" link on the OFA websiteThe test kit will allow the use of saliva applied to a special paper card that can then be returned to the lab. The special paper (FTA paper) will supply enough DNA samples for over twenty tests so when the direct marker is found, no further DNA collection will be required. Adding the dog to the Canine Phenome site is still required before results will be sent, but the ordering the test kit is a separate entry at this point.
The kit consists of the
FTA card
Foam swab to collect the saliva
Instructions
Labels for mailing to the University of Missouri
Any tests in progress from the previous procedure will be completed. The OFA and the University of Missouri have entered into a cooperative agreement to offer this new procedure.
Thank you!

You can still send in blood, in fact they would still like to get blood samples as it will be used for other developed DNA tests,
This information about the test kit has been posted in other threads, but it is always good to have the information repeated as it is important that we all have our kids tested!

My little girl is from Benita. she is in Sparta, TN. I'm recently concerned with Kili having Fanconi and I was looking for info on her parents to see if they had tested yet. Doing a google search I came across this VERY old post. Figured I'd reply anyways.
