• This is our first time mating and we are having problems.

Our male (Baxter, 6) was trying quite a bit in the begining but our female (Bailey, 2) yelped and snipped at him at every attempt. Baxter quit trying. Now she is letting him mount but as soon as he mounts and gets close she yelps. This scares him and he dismounts.

We don't want to have it completed artificially. How do we get her to relax? How do we get him to stay on once she yelps?

  • Banshee also cried, when Jester was hanging and I was able to calm her down while petting her and holding her in my arms. But until this, everything was ok with her. Maybe it is not the right day now. I am sure, she will stand for him, once the day is right. At which day of the season are you now?

    Regards,
    Esther

  • She is coming up on you weeks now.

  • I am sure that you will not like this response, however….

Have you done health testing? Your bitch is too young (IMO) to be bred on her second season at age 2. She is too young to have had her hips done, unless you did a prelim OFA done on her hips. Have they both been DNA tested for Fanconi? Had they up to date eye exams? Male had his hips done? Did you do Brucellosis on both?

As far as breeding, did you do progestrone tests to see if she was ready to be bred? And maiden bitches can be difficult. Are you holding both dogs? One holding the bitch, one holding the male? Or are you just letting them go at it? (Which is not a good thing to do)....

  • Just a heads up, if your B's haven't AT LEAST been Cerf'ed, Fanconi DNA tested and hips OFA'ed you aren't likely to get much help from breeders on this forum. Having been on the forum over a year, I hope you have gotten a sense for the general attitude towards breeding. It's pretty pervasive, not hard to pick up on….
You might want to check out the issues Porthos had with his bitch when she whelped.

  • I'll apologize now before i step on anyones's toes But in my option why do u even need to try and breed them ? There's enough dogs out there as is that need homes  Dogs have been "mating" for years without ANY human assistance and IMO if u need to "help" them out it's not right. It's like pushing ur child into having s@@ when there not ready IMO I just don't and never will understand why people think it's a good idea to breed just cuz they have 2 dogs weather they be pure breed or not IMO i think there really should only be a limited # of breeders at a time and then the rest get fixed .
So my Option would be GET THEM BOTH FIXED and forget about breeding !!

I recall that last fall you had mentioned wanting to wait until Bailey's 2nd heat to breed, and you were advised to wait until she was older than 2 yrs so that, among other things, you could have necessary testing done.

You said then you planned to be a responsible breeder.

I'm curious, why did you decide to go ahead and breed a bitch that is too young?

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me that you have had all the testing done, and that you have been in contact with other B breeders to help mentor you in this… if not.. then you may want to consider these two steps very carefully.
People don't become responsible breeders without allot of help from other responsible breeders.

  • I know your probably happy and excited at the IDEA of having a litter of puppies, but there is so much more to it.
Please, if the dogs have not mated, wait.
    PLEASE.
