Podengo specialty

Off Topic
  • Many of you have commented about my podengo Hanna - last weekend we had a specialty - with all 3 sizes. Lots of new people to dog shows have these and many from the audience were pressed into service.

fYI - I now have a boy Podengo Grande - (god the shipping and exchange rate to import from Europe was horrid)

You will see him in these pictures he is the one that curled up to go to sleep outside the ring.

Here is a link to what a photographer was doing.

  • Great looking dogs! Very nice..

I do think they look better standing with their tail down instead of the tail being held up.

  • Very nice photos. I rather like the wire Grandes. They look familiar. Weren't there a couple of movies with wires in them?

  • Actually yes the wire MEDIO (although they were sort of on the big side of that - and I don't think anyone actually measured them) was in several movies. Zeus and Roxanne (dolphin and dog friend) Second Hand Lions, The Lake House, Dantes Peak, Three Wishes, Soccer Dog. Also in a couple of commercials.

There is a new 'star' in a movie for next year I think - but don't know the name.

BTW the Dog in Winn Dixie was NOT a Podengo but a Berger Picard.

I think re: tail up or down - jury is still out on what we will do for stacking with the tail. Doesn't matter for Hanna cause her tail just wags and wags - so holding it still in any position is problematic.

  • Wow! I didn't realize they had been in so many movies. No wonder they look familiar hehe.

  • I like Ouiser and Kangoo… medio wires.

Kangoo is a blast…. all boy and goffier than all get out.

Podengo temperament - first as I said before they have a softer temperament than basenjis - harsh corrections result in a dog that will melt into the ground. The Medio size (keeping in mind I do not live with this size) needs to be kept busy - they are active and appear to do well when there is some pretty physical exercise and brain activity for them. Lure coursing, agility, even rally can keep them happy and focused. A couple of foks are going to try them at fly ball. All sizes like to hunt and must always be behind a fence or on a leash. I find that the Grande (BIGS) are a bit more laid back. They love to run, they will catch bunnies and birds on the fly and in Portugal they run down boar and stag. Their preference appears to be investigating their enviroment for any changes and sleeping on the couch. If you think of primitive hounds of the Mediteranian Basin - you get what a Podengo looks like and how they are. Similar to Ibizan, Pharoh Hound, Cirneci, basenjis etc. The little size - pequeno is a breed apart - it is smaller 8-12 inches and is not a bred down big it is longer than tall and is a rabbit hunter in thick brush. It was a treat watching those pups in action so thanks for sharing this video link with others also. Like to say I have few French Bulldog puppies and they have demonstrated to be very pleasing for children and elderly sue to their friendly nature and smooth temperament.

They really are beautiful puppies. You have done a great job with them that was lot of puppies to care for at one time. I do so wish I could have one but we want another Basenji at one point and I could not have it then. Makes me sad as my husband will tell you I have this fit called I want what I want when I want it. Must be why Jaycee and I get along so well we act to much a like. Ha! Ha! I am sure you will get great homes for your babies. Rita Jean

oops Robin forgot to answer your question - she is eligible in FSS AKC for Companion events - I plan on starting with Rally - I may do some lure events just the baby try it out ones because she is not old enough until November and we don't have much lure coursing in Minnesota in November. Plus I have to say that going to lure coursing without having John Siverson there would feel a little strange - I have a trainer who is very interested in agility with her and would actually show her in agility for me - which given my propensity for falling down might not be bad.
