  • Hello to everyone. This is great, finally a place where crazy basenji people can converse about the great breed we have. Well to introduce myself, I am also staff at Basenji Park, along with basenjiboy and dogtravler. My duties there are physical training and grounds keeping. I also go along with dogtravler to some of the shows where i am kennel staff (dog walker). I own some and coe own some of the 6 basenji we have, not sure which ones anymore lost track after the 4th one. I also am in charge of many other creatures at Basenji Park, we also have a smooth fronted caiman, a number of turtles, tortioses, and lots of fish. The caiman and the turtles are housed in lake Basenji (a pond in the basement). I will post some pics of the other residents of Basenji Park. Basenji has posted most all the pics of the dogs so i will post some of the others.

  • welcome! basenji park sounds great and hope to emmulate it one day. i also keep a red eared slider but in an aquarium.as for the caiman…i wonder if they taste as good as gators? lol

Thank you for the welcome. Also, for the advice. He seems to be okay around the horses for the moment. One of the mares gave him a bit of a stink eye and he moved out of the area quite quickly all on his own. He loved the trimmings of the hooves left by the farrier :) I did post a few photos that our daughter took on the Show Off section.

Welcome, and so glad to see you respect a dog enough to do some research before getting one. I LOVE that attitude! Stick around - there is tons of great info here and everyone cares about the breed SO much! :)

Great to have you and Gizzmo here with us. I can't wait to see some pictures! Regarding potty/pee training, do you have a command word to use to let Gizzmo know it's his pee time? We use 'hurry hurry'. Just remember that he'll need to pee after sleeping, eating and play times. In a thread awhile back, it was said that a dog at 5 months 'should' be able to hold their pee for 6 hours. The rule for that is taking their age and adding 1, hence Gizzmo could hold for 6 hours. At 5 months, I was setting the alarm for around 5:30 in the morning to get up and let Kipawa out. Eventually he was the one that let me know that he didn't want to be woken at 5:30 a.m. So, I decided to trust him, and he didn't let me down. No accidents. Gizzmo will be there in no time. Time flies when you have a basenji! :)

hey, you could get your feet wet by volunteering to foster or transport Basenjis! Go to BRAT web site and sign up. ALSO, go to dog shows and meet some basenjis. We have california breeders and owners here so you can get some hands on! http://basenjirescue.org/volunteer.asp

The choice is most certainly yours. And thank you for your interest in our breed. And now you may be able to educate others about the breed we care for.
