Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • @snorky998:

Yes, an Eldorado Adonis pup (now a gracefully aging elder) No, not purchased from an "Eldorado" breeder that I know of (if that makes sense). Tanza, I purchased my dog from Jim I., Quincy, IL. Ty's Rwanda lines were registered per pup contract. I only included the link to show the Icenogle/Coe relationship, as that was my boys co-breeders as well in 1997.

Not sure what you mean by "Rwanda" lines? But if Adonis is the pups sire, you are correct, there is no litter in his breeding information on the date you are showing as Ty's birthdate… so could be that Jim I (I don't know any breeders by that name in IL, by the way) never registered the litter....

If you know Ty's Dam's name, that would be helpful

  • @LiveWWSD:

    Lisa and or Pat,
Does Sally also get information from the CPP if owners fill out the pedigree survey? Just curious about how the whole process works

She does not get any information from the CPP site (which is pretty new). She gets her information from breeders directly, stud books, show catalogs… but mostly she relys on breeder information....

  • Anyone who has pedigree information that is not in Sally's database and wants it listed is welcome to email me the information and I will send it to Sally.

The minimum information that I need is the Sire, Dam, and puppy's AKC registration number.

If the dog is not AKC registered then I need a little bit more like Name, Birthdate, Color, Sex

If you only have partial information that is okay, you can send it along. Sometimes we can piece things together with partial information or it may link up to something later when someone else provides info.

  • What I was told by Jim Icenogle was that all of his pups, if registered, had to have the word Rwanda in the registered name, I guess like a kennel name or something??

My daughter is searching through her things at college to see if she took Ty's complete papers with her. I happened to run across a xerox of the sires lines stuck in her copy of "The Complete Basenji".

Funny, I could have SWORN the breeder told us the litter was registered. Live and learn.

    Thanks for all the help.

BTW…before posting this I googled his name with the word 'dog' and it appears he now raises and shows Chinese Cresteds. At least if I can't find Ty's papers I may be able to locate him and he should have the copies of the dam's side, right?

  • The litter may very well be registered, many litters are registered but don't show up in Sally's database. Do you have Ty's registered name?

  • Dam's name is Rwanda White Diamonds.. (according to AKC). I will let Sally W know so she can make the links (as there is a litter mate on her site also)…

Jim I's dogs came from Hacker Basenjis....

Based on the pedigree, if you have not DNA tested for Fanconi, it would be a good idea.

  • Thank you for the info and the advice! I'm planning on him being tested. Glad the swabs are available now. I won't forget to register first.

    Again, thank you.

  • Interesting, I just visted OFFA and the Hacker web site with the new info you've given me. Very interesting.

BTW…..is it common to have a disclaimer concerning possible Fanconi infected dogs in a puppy sales contract?

Again, thank you for all the time and effort you put into helping me. You're a gem:D

I don't think that Hackers are active in breeder Basenjis at this time and have not been for 5 or more years…. their note about Fanconi comes from before we had the DNA test for Fanconi and we could only use our best judgement in breeding. So breeders could never say "never" regarding Fanconi prior to the DNA test. This is why it is so important that breeders test "before" breeding...

Glad that I can help.. and if you have more questions, please feel free to ask...

    Ivoss,

Do you mind if I email you Nemo's info? I was wondering how to get him on the database.

    Thanks,
    Clay

  • No problem. Send it to me and I will get it to Sally.

My Valentino had terrible dandruff. His vet said it was due to dry skin. She had me add Goat's milk and coconut oil to his diet. His dandruff lessened dramatically after about a month. The amount of coconut oil (solid or liquid) per day should be no more than 1 teaspoon per 10lbs of body weight. Valentino is about 27 lbs. so I give him about 2.5-3 teaspoons a day. I divide the amount in half and add it too his meals. I feed goat milk rarely because it is so high in calories.

Yeah you told me about that before and I'm clueless, but I'll try it if I need to, lol. could be the noise of occasional thump, could be they can hear it even tho we can't. My chow would be drooling buckets before we got a mile away. I just had to keep towels down and take off and bag along the trip. But I took her for a 7 hr trip to atlanta and she threw up and threw up, then stopped. Never threw up again. :( on your back. I had been getting radiofrequency ablations in the US, and they really helped. But doctors here will only do them once or twice. I have had at least 6 on one side, 3 on the other. :( But it's miraculous pain relief when it is done right. Maybe your dog acupuncturists knows of a human one they'd recommend?

Kipawa's skirt - it isn't big, but I actually love running my fingers over it. :)

So many of those poses and positions are the same things I see Paco do. I'm also no expert, and Paco's my first dog that's mine-all-mine for me to watch all the time, but I feel like Tag's face is very Basenji-like…and if he yodels as well... if he doesn't have Basenji in him, I'd at least say you could describe him to others as a Basenji-like dog.

@ibi_n_sane: the ears of the basenji of the pictures you show look like their is really something wrong, but it is not right to think that a basenji with a bit thin fur on his ears also has a condition/ disease that causes this. Of course, this dog is diagnosed with pattern baldness. And no, you can't say that every basenji/dog with less fur on the ears has this condition. Like Tanza said: it could be flies, or maybe cold, malnutrition.. I do think that Tillo's bald blackish ear rims are more than just 'loosing hair because it's winter/spring/summer..' And I would love to know what's causing it. That's why I wanted to ask it at the University and that's why I was suprised to see the B-ears on the screen and to hear about this 'pattern baldness' :)
