Test Strips anyone?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • I will begin test stripping very soon, Sahara will be 3 in Jan. She has tested Probably Affected, does anyone know where I can order them online cheap! Thanks!

  • Try Drugstore.com they have about the best prices for most things… make sure that you get Glucose test strips and not just ones for ketone, many of them come with both on the strip. Since they do not last long, best if you can find them to only get 50 at a time... and since they don't last, best to test a few days in a row....

  • How often should you test strip? We just rescued Cammie 10 weeks ago. She was tested at the shelter on 7/1/08 and at the vet on 7/12/08. I have no way of knowing whether or not her dna has ever been submitted since she was rescued. I've thought about doing the dna test.

You should do the DNA test…. then you know if you have to continue on and do the "monthly" strip test if she were to come back as affected. I am sure that she was not submitted prior... please read about basenji health at www.basenjihealth.org

  • Where can you buy test strips? (I've never bought them before) A regular grocery store or someplace like Wal-Mart or RiteAid?

    Lori

  • Yes or you can buy them on line too… You will want Urine Test strips for Glucose in Urine.

  • well, now that Tayda is on the protocol I've got this bottle of strips that I won't need anymore… I only used about 5 of them so its just about full. I can mail them to who ever wants them.... I can mail ~5 each to a bunch of different people. You could email me your address to ms.shell.tsai at gmail dot com and i'll drop em in the mail. It's on me!

  • What a nice thing to do for folks who have yet to test strip their b's.
Sharing the strips, letting them see its not a big deal is wonderful.
    Thank you.

  • thanks, i really want to help other people who are maybe scared to strip, or don't know which ones to get or whatever other reason (i've been thinking about WHY it took me so long) to just get at least a few….

I may start another thread about so it can have its own thread....

  • Tayda, if you have free test strips to give away, I'll gladly take them! You can write to me off-forum at ZenGrrrl@aol.com.

    Thanks!

    Lori

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

Dog owners weighing the cost of titers against the seemingly lower cost of a possibly redundant booster should consider the estimated numbers of adverse reactions to immunization and the cost of treating an adverse reaction. Time Out: Rabies Researchers Assess New, Long-lasting Vaccine NEWStat, American Animal Hospital Association June 25, 2008 http://newsmanager.commpartners.com/aaha2/issues/2008-06-25/index.html "A rabies vaccine and vaccination schedule with a seven year DOI will reduce the number of animals that develop adverse reactions following immunization, which is currently estimated to be 1-3% of the population." Based on the estimate of "…more than 72 million pet dogs in the U.S." from the American Veterinary Medical Association U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics Sourcebook (2007 Edition)http://www.avma.org/reference/marketstats/sourcebook.asp, the currently estimate 1-3% of the population adversely reacting to vaccination translates into between 720,000 and 2,160,000 dogs.

@jessi76: another vac I didn't see on your list is Lyme. Ask your vet about it IF tics are prevelant in your area. where I live, ALOT of dogs are coming down with Lyme disease (spread by deer tics), so I didn't even think twice about getting my dog the vaccine. although we keep him on a flea & tic preventative, the vaccine is another added precaution. like I said though, only if tics are an issue in your area. No, they don't seem to be a big deal here, the worst "pest" we have aside from fleas are chiggers or you may know of them as sand fleas. Thanks for you help.
