• I know that there is not way of knowing for certain from the puppy how the parents fair in terms of being a carrier or cleared, but just because I'm curious:

Does anyone know what the probability is of the parents to be clear if the puppy is clear? How does it change if there are more than one puppy tested as being clear?

here is a link to a chart that was done by Rugosa Basenjis, should give you some idea to the questions you posed.

  • Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it.

After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be:
Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear).

correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.

The more data that is in the data base, the better people can use the that information as this is a Linkage test only… and errors can be made either human or test....

No the parents were not. Most of her dogs that have been tested have been negative for fanconi so I figure my chances are good that EL D will be fine.

@dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...
