Leaving the House WITHOUT the Basenji

    So lately we've been trying out leaving Dallas uncrated while we take short little trips to the store or other places where we'll only be gone like 30 minutes or so. He's been doing really well in not destroying things so obviously our hope is to one day leave him uncrated all day, as he still is sleeping in his crate at night [prefers it almost as he has gotten used to it being HIS bed].

    Anyway, the issue I have is that whenever we get ready to go he darts towards the door & no matter how many times I have tried training him to sit by the door while we walk uot, he just won't do it. He will sit & wait with the door wide open [when we plan on taking him with us] until we say "break" allowing him to come outside with us. However, if he notices his leash/collar aren't on & we're trying to leave without him, no amount of treats have stopped him from trying to dart out the door with us.

    Just wondering if anyone had tips on how to train him to sit & watch us walk out the door without making a mad dash behind us!

    You might try giving his something irresistable to chew on/eat while you walk out the door…like a sizeable biscuit (toss it far away from the door right before you walk out)...or a smoked chew bone...again put if far away from the door, and then walk out.

    I do something similar to that, Quercus. It is almost like a game. I take a small piece of a treat and make him sit next to the door. Then, when I am ready to go, I toss it across the room and he goes running after it. By the time he finds and eats it, I am gone. Of course, I am in the same stages of leaving him for short periods (no more than 15 minutes- very beginning) and seeing how he does with not tearing the house completely apart.

    AS DonC says,"the question of whether they WANT to...". I had one that after about a mile would lay down on his side and refuse to move. More than once did I have to carry that pain the butt Basenji, on my shoulders native style, home.

As long as you keep your valuables out of reach, it will be fine. Tom The issue isn't valuables. The issue is if he destroys and eats something that could kill him. Any dog that chews or destroys needs crating until he really is safe alone.

    I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

    I would LOVE to involve my B with Lure Coursing. She is a mix, so she could only run in practices, but that's fine with me. I just know she would love it… and I would appreciate her getting the exercise. Unfortunately the closest group that participates in lure coursing is approximately 2 hours away from me. If anyone knows of a group that participates in lure coursing in the knoxville, tn area, please post or send me a private message. THANKS!

    I've hiked off leash at numerous areas here in the SF Bay area. They love it! Any there was only 1 area that was a problem with ticks. To me after 30 years hiking with them it's the best way to establish a great relationship with them. There's no two ways about it, Basenjis love hiking adventures.
