Zip got her JC!!

So I took Zip lure coursing yesterday. It was my first time and her second. She didn't have a qualifying score her first time. Yesterday when I arrived I found Denise Searcy and she told me that the conditions of the course were rather unfavorable due to the length of the grass. I watched many many whippets lose the lure in the field. So I wasn't expecting much. I waited for something like 3 hours before they got to the tests. I was way amused with how rookie I looked compared to everyone else, mostly regarding my lack of shade-making equipment. Everyone else was pretty elaborate, it looked like they must have a coursing bin they keep in their garage or something. I didn't even bring a crate! Whoops.
Zip and I spent most of the time sitting in the back of my van waiting, I didn't want to stand out with her in the direct sun and tire her out. So finally they got to the JC's. ZIP ROCKED IT!! I was so impressed. She lost the lure briefly once when it got ahead of her but then she took off again and followed it back to the start. And her second run was completely consistent. It was especially unexpected because so many hounds (like 9/10) that ran in the trials earlier lost the lure and everyone was telling me it was going to be a really tough JC. It was so much fun to watch.
I didn't know she could do both legs of her JC in one day under 2 different judges so I was excited when I found out I could run her again and get that done with.
So now I'm supposed to make sure she can run with other B's in a trial, yes?? How would I go about practicing her in that way? Would I have an opportunity to do that at the next trial I take her to?

That's great! We know nothing about the whole LC thing but JC'd one of our's. It's so cool to see them do what they naturally do isn't it?

Congrats to you and your Baby! Go Zip!

Alright, congrats!!!

Practice, practice, and more practice before you try a real trial with other Basenjis. Find someone with a good running male to let her practice with the first couple of times. Consider using a muzzle to keep her attention on the lure and not the other dogs. Since you are in Southern California, do you know Deb Voss? Her boy Cole would be a great "training" boy for her to run with… Have you ever ran her with another dog?

No. I've had her since November and this last weekend was the first test I've taken her to. Where and how would she practice running with him? Like are there courses always set up somewhere?? I assumed you can't find a course outside of an official test/trial event.
Is Deb related to Lisa?? I'd never heard Deb's name until now. Where in Socal is she?

She is lvoss's (Lisa's) Mom, maybe Lisa will send you a PM with her information

Practices are typically held at all trials after they are over. That is where you would need to go to practice. Also sometimes clubs put on a practice. You need to contact local coursing clubs and ask them. You can get trial dates from www.asfa.org and also all the clubs are listed on their site. Are you a member of the So. Cal Basenji club? South Coast Basenji Fanciers? If you go to www.basenji.org you can find the link to them for information about the club.

So apparently the 2 runs for a JC cannot be on the same day under the same event number, even if it was 2 different judges. 😞
The club secretary alerted me of the error a couple days ago. She said the AKC is very stubborn about it too.
And come to think of it, I should have known. I'd read the rules before. So anyway, it was by accident that Zip got 2 green ribbons in the same day and she will have to do her second JC run at another event in the future.
The secretary is kindly refunding my $$ and giving us a free entry for that coursing club. Hopefully we will be able to take advantage of that free entry in May: the event is the same weekend as DP's college graduation and a week before we move across the country. We'll see.

I have to disagree… we do two JC's in the same day with two different judges all the time... we did it last year for the Nationals... They were submitted at JC A and B. As long as the club "had applied for two JC's tests" with AKC it is possible. However, if the club only had approval and an event number for only one, then they are correct... you can't run twice. They would have had to apply for "two" JC tests on the same day...

I assume it was the latter situation..On the premium for that day there was only one JC box to check. Oh well…..a practice run. Still stoked that she followed it in such tall grass.

In that case, they are correct… unless they got two JC tests approved with AKC... you can only run and get one leg of the JC... but your right... practice is good...

Looks like your connection to Basenji Forums was lost, please wait while we try to reconnect.
