Sally has blood coming out of her?

  • hahah…funny, I think I was posting while you were. I answered your question--yes swelling!

  • @massagemom3:

O.K. I just got off the phone with them and they said she was spayed "per teh owner"…Argh! I can't really find a scar. And she has her Due Claws(spell?)...She is swollen down there, and not complaining a bit. The SPCA said to call and tomorrow,a nd they will mail the certificate to have her spayed there. I am so angry! Why do they trust owners who drop off many dogs at one time. Did the vet not look at her? O-well...She could have gotten prego's in that kennel(SPCA)...I didn't know they only have heat approx every 6-9 months. We've only had her since Mid-Oct.. I'll keep you posted. Its heat! I just know it is!

Most Basenjis usually only have a season once a year…. some have twice a year, but typically only once and usually in the Fall. But there are those Basenjis that don't read the book... but sounds like she is in season to me. And you can't have her spayed while she is in season, so you need to be careful with her around any other dogs that might be in tact.... Honestly too, I can't find the scars on my kids after I have had them spayed.

And one other FYI, you might want to consider having her spayed with your own Vet, this is not a slam against the SPCA or any other SPCA, however sometimes they do not use the best of Vets for spay/neuter surgeries. And while it is a routine surgery, if not done right you can have problems for the rest of her life with her leaking urine....

  • Its really crummy the old owners set her up for this season.
    Sigh.
I am always shocked at how some people are re pets.
Glad you paid attention so you don't have any pups coming your way.

  • And if she is in season, for Basenjis it is 28-30 days… She might have started a few days ago, as they are very good about keeping themselves clean when they first come into season... even veteran breeders can miss it...

  • We just noticed Nexa is coming into heat yesterday, we'll have to see how Leo does. We kenneled them last weekend, I don't know if another female at the kennel brought it on or if she is just going on of those odd basenjis. Leo is neutered, but I'm sure we're still in for some excitement. Good luck with Sally, I feel your pain:(

What Pat said. I'd also ask to have the pre-blood work done. This is rather "optional" with younger animals, but I always have it done. And, given her age, it will serve as a nice baseline for future blood work ups.

Amen and thanks for the reminder about bloodwork…. It is very important IMO... I never have anything done without bloodwork regardless of the age...

  • Yes, bloodwork is the way to go.
Gives you a base line and can help see issues that might crop up in the future.
I always do the blood check regardless of age.
Also, ask if they know how to put b's under sedation.
Extra important to have them do it right.

  • I have called the vet and I set her surgery for April 21st. She did pretty well, considering her situation and now she is recovering from a urinary infection. But its cleared up!

  • I will keep a prayer for your basenji girl.

  • I never want to go through heat again. I mean Sally doesn't want to go thru heat!

  • Laugh, I know what you meant, neither of you want to have to do this again!
    Hugs

  • Did you check her out on the photo journal for them in beds? I posted a new message for you in there.

  • Oh, dear, I miss it.
    How do I access it?
I am not that great with computers Laugh, like you all didn't know that!
    grin

  • No you saw it, I'm just a dork, I posted at the same time as you. hehehehehe….your a better one than I when it comes to computers!

Your right the SPCA wasn't even concerned that they allowed a female to be there and didn't physically check her. They said may she was too hairy down there. NO HAIR! , I kept asking where is her inguinal scaring…my vet didn't even look. I'm going to a new vet! It also explained her being aggressive approx 1-2 weeks prior to us noticing her season had arrived. And Yes she is VERY clean. We just kept her in the kitchen with fresh towels every day, and she had little "show". She had enough mind you,but not a huge amount. She was so clean that she threw up a few days from cleaner herself. YUCK! I felt so bad for her. She slept a lot. But she is getting fixed soon. Yes I am having blood work done before the procedure. The SPCA didn't feel the need to do that, so I said No thank you.

It is too bad that your SPCA has reached the point where they don't care. In California it is state law that all animals adopted from a shelter be spayed/neutered prior to leaving the shelter. It is true that the shelter does no frills spay/neuter. They keept the cost as low as possible and even doing that people balk at the $75 adoption fee which includes shots, spay/neuter, and county licensing.

@tanza said in What are Blood Titers?: Benefits are that we are not over vaccinating our dogs. Do try to find a copy of 'Who Killed The Darling Buds of May' on Amazon or wherever ! By Catherine O'Driscoll, subtitled along the spine with 'What Vets don't tell you about Vaccines.' And on the back 'Read this book before you vaccinate your dog or cat.' ISBN 0 9523048 1 3 Very illuminating ! My first copy (this is another book I have lent out and had to buy again and which is now chained to the bookshelf) was sent to me by a very responsible and well-known breeder in USA.

My Basenji had this problem on and off for years before I finally found a good solution. I actually just posted about it elsewhere in here so I'm going to attempt to quote it in here. Let's hope it works lol. @mandi2doors: Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful! Here are the links for what I use: http://tinyurl.com/27jaroe http://tinyurl.com/2adwtqn- 1 capsule 2x per day http://tinyurl.com/276rn24 - 1 capsule 1x per day http://tinyurl.com/2g47lsp - 1 capsule about 3x per week (I give it on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays) Good luck!!

My pup's first heat was when she was a little over 10 months old. She had been around many girls that were in heat a month and a half before she went in and I had hoped that she would be in and over her heat before she returned to me from her show road trip LOL - no such luck. :D:D.

@tanza: Then you are fine…. worst would be a Carrier... no worries.... That's why I chose Katie. After much research into breeders in my area I was very impressed with the bloodlines she produces, and happy with how she has bred to clear any possibility of Fanconi from her bloodline. ALways good to wait longer to get a pup and know you chose the right breeder. :D
