Missing fur, itching question

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • So I'm from Nebraska but moved to Texas. For the Fourth, I went to visit Nebraska and took my girl with me. While there she was attacked by a Boxer/Mastiff mix. She wasn't seriously injured, but lost a patch of fur around her throat. Now that the fur is growing back, the area is red and irritated and she scratches at it a lot. I'm worried that she's going to keep the fur from growing back in that spot, and I feel bad that it's bothering her. Is there something I can do or should I go to the vet about it?

  • Have you tried any ointments like A&D or Hydrocortisone. I would take her to the vet just to make sure. So sorry you had to go through this awful experience.

  • Or you can try Tea Tree Oil… which will stop the itch (usually) and help heal

  • @jys1011:

I haven't yet because I never know what human stuff can work on my dog. I have both of those laying around the house and haven't thought to try yet. I'm somewhat worried about taking her to the vet after this since she's become pretty aggressive. I was hoping to try stuff on my own, and if that didn't work, then go to a vet.

A&D works great and is very safe for dogs…. even baby puppies....

  • I've used hydrocortisone on my highly allergic boxer and she does okay with it.

  • Arlene-what's your boxer allergic to??

My C3PO is allergic to just about EVERYTHING..you name it he's allergic. So we've been giving him allergy shot for desensitizing the inhalant allergies. I've also had to change his food for the food allergies..GEE WHIZ :D

  • Everything-absolutely. She's now on fish and sweet pot. Not having ANYTHING else and still is itching like a fiend. I'm going to take her to the vet in August for them. She's constantly on benedryl. But she also had HOD and basically still has a VERY low immune system. She reacts to everything.

  • Have you tried the allergy shots to desensitize to inhalant allergies?? It seems to be working.

  • I thought I had it under control then I put advantage multi on her-baaaaaaad mommy! A few more weeks-hopefully-then I can start again with her food. There is a new food out there that has no potato in it. It has tapioca. I'm going to try it. I haven't even had her tested yet b/c it will cost a fortune up here. She was doing okay b/f the advantage multi-if I can get her back to that state I'll be happy.

Behavioral difference depend on the dog, the age the dog is neutered and other factors. Lots of studies on the topic but mostly you avoid the heightened mating response to other dogs in heat and chance breeding. Behaviorally, effects are generally not that much otherwise.

@YodelMa: … and supplement generously with fresh Omega 3 ...with a quality Omega 3 supplement–the good stuff isn't cheap, but everyone remarks on my pack's shiny coats. Plus it's an anti-inflammatory, helps keep them young & healthy. As sighthounds, B's have less oily skin that's prone to dryness in winter climates! YodelMa - can I ask you what the brand is of the Omega 3 and where you get it (I'm in B.C.)? When it comes to my Kipawa, I'll pass on my lattes to make sure he gets products that are quality.

@agilebasenji: I have a friend who has a nonbasenji dog that was just diagnosed with Fanconi. They (owner and vet) started the dog on the Gonto's protocal. (yea!) I know there is a Fanconi list, but did not know if it was open to just Fanconi affected basenjis or if other breeds were welcome. Also, is it a yahoo group? thanks It is a yahoo group and it is open to anyone with a Fanconi affected dog, or so I have been told.

@MacPack: I would bathe her with a soothing non-irritating soap for starters. She may have contacted plants that are causing the itching and washing may help. HOpefully you can get some benadryl in the morning if she is still itching. When any of ours get a flea, they act like that so if you have a flea comb, I would try that as well. Good luck! yes flea combs do help with the itching. I have found the ones from JW to be pretty good

@basi: This is what I liked about the German system and many other countries in europe, being that all dogs have to be tested before they can be bred from. @tanza: Is the DNA Fanconi test reconized as a required test in those countries in Europe that require pre-testing? And it is really no different here… most have or are testing, but there are still people that do not and still have their heads in the sand about testing... I wish that all testing was public knowledge like the Fanconi test.... like hips, eyes, etc... Following more in depth from Basi, she is also meaning that in Germany breeders will recieve VERY hefty fines for breeding without the proper testing and permissions from the breed club. They can have their kennel license (of sorts) revoked, be denied from entering shows and registering dogs of their breeding or from other breeders). A dog has to be of a certain age, and received a set amount of show awards before it can be entered into the breeding permissions exam. Then a actual show judge and member of the breed club evaluate the dogs to be entered into the stud books.
