Pit Bull Attack

Basenji Talk
  • I hate the term "guard dog" from most people. 9 times out of 10 it means they have a poorly socialized, inadequately trained BIG dog.

And you are so right: Like with Basenjis, only way moreso because of the sheer power of the breed, training must be constant and consistent.

  • Guard dog is exactly what the name implies. A highly trained, socialized, temperment tested dog that obeys every command the owner gives the first time, every time. I cringe when I see the cops on TV with their poorly trained dogs. In the private sector that we train, if a dog doesn't obey the first command in a consistent manner he goes back to basic obedience before moving forward. Yes, I understand sometimes 2nd commands happen-but they should be few and very far between. If I say return to a guard dog, I mean return and let it go. Again training doesn't happen overnight and any idiot can train a dog to bite someone-scary isn't it!

OMG, pls. let us know how Benny is doing after all those bites… If I were you, I would still report the incident to the police or Animal Control... It doesn't matter if you don't know who the owner is...This would establish history and should the owner be identified, then there's documentation that the proper authorities can look back to... Also, you said you've seen this pit bull before... If you see that dog again, maybe you can observe it (from a safe distance, of course) and maybe he'll lead you to its home... But safety (your safety) is priority one... Just my $0.02...

@crystalncody: LOL, I had to try it as well, and Cody had a simlar response, only his expression was more like, "Can't you see I'm trying to take a nap? Jeeze!" Then he got up, circled, and faced the other direction with a huff! They love to sigh. We are such inconveniences to them.

Thanks for the advice everyone! Picking them up would have probably worked in this situation because the other dog was small, but i couldn't think that fast as it was happening! but carrying some kind of spray sounds like a good idea, i am going to look for that at the pet store. Thanks again!
