Appointments with the podiatrist are really not necessary ! Go to the hardware store and invest in a dremel. You can do their nails yourself in a few seconds, weekly or at need. I do mine about every 10 - 14 days.
Sit down, grab a dog and tuck it firmly under your arm, so it is kind of sitting up on your lap. With the arm that is around the dog, hold each paw by turns, steading the claw to be trimmed. With the other hand, a quick rub with the dremel to each claw - and move to the next paw.
As they are very long, you might have to take them back with a Resco clipper first, but then maintain them with the dremel.
All over very quickly and a 'special' bickie, perhaps, as a reward.
Whoever is done first goes to the cupboard and paws at the door for his treat even while I am still doing the other ! -
@macattack - I agree, save your money and get a dremel! They are pretty cheap..... And another way to do nails, at least for me (my arms are not long enough to do the method that Zande posted). Sit on the floor, put the Basenji in their back between your legs. You can easily get to each nail. I give a small treat after each foot is done. Either way will work.

If you are going with a groomer, you might want to discuss the expected outcome with them prior to the trim. Many groomers go for a trim that is parallel to the floor and leaves your dog "clicking" when they walk. The correct way would (gradually) trim the nail to be perpendicular to the floor and allows your pup to properly (and quietly) walk on the pads of their paws,.
I mention the concept of "gradually", only because it often takes several trims to correct a bad trim job.

If the dog is clicking, the nails are probably not pared enough as well as not pared correctly. Walking for too long on long nails can, over the years, affect the pasterns and even caused rheumatic problems. Buy a dremel and do them regularly !

I purchased the pet version last week and wow! My older Basenji was used to the sound and the younger we fed her treats to get used to it. It saved me a trip to the pet salon and after only 2 trims, the trimmer pays for itself.
