    Our Basenji had incontinence and sometimes there isn't anything you can do but we gave her probiotics and that helped tremendously. We used new chapter as it was water soluble and added it to her food. But in the end she had kidney failure so you should get her blood work checked.

    Hi Jay, welcome! Did you have your dog posted on Craig's List? I'm grateful that you found our website, and that you are looking for solutions for Trey. Giving him away before addressing his behavior just pushes his issues onto someone else, who doesn't love him like your family does. If Trey hasn't been to the doctor, you may be able to find some low-cost vet options. When the economy gets tough and we all pinch pennies. It's easy to overlook checkups for our dogs, especially when the Dr says, "let's run some tests." :eek: That has $$$ all of it, you know? In Tampa, because the vet offices are slow, they are running great specials to keep busy. Maybe you (or your wife) can call around to find someone who will give Trey a good check up without costing an arm and a leg… I'm glad to hear that your daughter is in 4th grade (versus 4 years old), because she's at an age where she can respect Trey's boundaries. I don't think a basenji would simply chomp on someone without sometime of forwarning... unless he's sleeping, and wakes up grouchy? :confused: If that's the case, as long as everyone knows, I don't see her in imminent danger. Hopefully you or your wife can spend some time reading up on the quirks of a basenji. It's one thing to visit a basenji, and another to live with them. :) Like Anne said, the basenji breed is very smart and common training methods with other dogs don't necessarily work. Does Trey get along with your lab? Are they bonding? It is a lot of change for everyone in the house, including the dog.... mutual respect and love will go a long way. :) I hope it's a happy home for all, even if times are tough. I hope we can help you out!:)

    I agree, growling should neither be rewarded or punished, it is telling you that she is not happy and distressed, especially as she is not a regular growler. It gives you the chance to de-escalate the situation and be sure everyone is safe and comfortable. A good trainer will teach you, they won't have to necessarily see it.

    Hello, My lovely leather handbag and shoe chewing B nipped my leg when I came to get her from a friend who had looked after her for the day. She must have thought I wasn't paying enough attention to her after my absence. In fact, she also makes those odd noises (sort of groans, beginning of a yoddle I suppose) when I come back to my car after I have left her in it with all sorts of goddies to chew. Nipping is exceptional but I am careful as I wouldn't want her to do this to strangers or visitors. She does try to push them off her place on my sofa, funny to watch but a dog is a dog and I don't think it is a good idea to let them nip us, whatever the reason!

    Other times, Jazzy lets him chew so hard on her neck that she gags and does nothing. THAT upsets me, and I always pull him off. He is relentless. Same at my house with a 6yr old and 6month old. It is the challenge for the alpha position. And I believe there is an adjustment for the young ones with a full set of big teeth learning bite sensitivity. I have noticed Cairo now immitating the little grooming bites that Caesar used to do to him. The biting and choking must be okay or the adult would stop it. I thought it was just Caesar being sweet and taking it, but it sounds like you are all experiencing the same thing. A soft muzzle is fantastic for this type of behavior. Normally they both play. But in the evenings, Cairo is just too much with that second energy spurt and all Caesar wants to do is sit with us on the couch. The soft muzzle freezes Cairo like a stone. Once he stops sulking and he finally sits or does a down for me he will come back with kisses for everyone.:p I find that he will have to immediately pee after the muzzle comes off becuase it stresses him out (FYI). Also, Cairo goes to bed at 9pm every night and Caesar gets to hang out with us and gets a break. I call it the acting like a 2 year old syndrome. Cairo is fighting sleep and gets ultra pesky.
