1 yr old basenji dog aggressive after second heat

    Hello everyone.

    My 1/2 basenji 1/2 shiba mix personality has changed slightly ever since her second heat cycle. Just to give you a back round she has been at the dog park since 3 months old every day and loves people and dogs. Very well socialized. All of the sudden she just doesn’t like the vibe of certain dogs. I’m not sure if it’s an energy thing or if it’s because they are intact. We never had this issue until this second heat. I wonder if getting her spayed will change this behavior? Has anyone else dealt with this? She is honestly the best dog i just want to fix this issue.

    After a couple of heats she is likely mature and it is an age where their attitude towards other dogs often changes. Are there any specific things about the dogs she doesn't like? e.g. same sex aggression is fairly common in Basenjis, and for that matter dog aggressive Basenjis are not unusual. She isn't a puppy anymore and sadly some dogs develop a dislike for other dogs. I doubt spaying will change anything, but someone else may want to comment on that. Out of five Basenjis I had one that was same sex aggressive, two that were dog aggressive, and two that were friendly towards any and all dogs.

    @cpumbel I would seriously doubt that spaying would make a ha'pporth of difference. But for how long after the season did she remain aggressive ? I mean is it continuing ever since the season and if so for how long ?

    Could be she settles down again.

    This happened to my Basenji (now 18 months old) during her second heat cycle at 12 months old. She has always been fearful of stranger's hands but until that point used to flinch away but then enjoy being stroked. Just before her second heat cycle she started responding aggressively with a growl and showing her teeth. From what I understand, once this happens they realise it's a more effective way to get people to back off and then it's likely to be repeated. I'm trying to condition her to use a muzzle so we can safely practice greetings with strangers again (at her own pace).

    I refer to this as doggy PMS, especially this time of year when most dogs seem to be "in season". Take a break from the dog park for a month or two until it passes. It may sound over simplified, but it seems to work for my (spayed) girl. It also seems to make an acceptable self explanatory explanation for others to keep their dogs at a distance and not "in her face". A quick, "sorry, doodle has a touch of PMS right now... perhaps the dogs can meet next time", seems to get people to back off without further explanation.

    Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

    I am not up to date on current rabies vaccines for dogs, but I know that in the past there was more than one formulation, as my next door neighbour's dog had an anaphylactic reaction when vaccinated and the vet made a note to use a different formulation for the next annual shot. In future the dog had no difficulties. There are known side effects to most vaccines. Aggression is not one I am familiar with, however, with rabies vaccination in countries that require it there isn't much choice. It would not be my first thought with an 18 month old dog showing aggression. Especially a Basenji objecting to being moved from a comfortable place.

    Basenjis' function in the wild is to go after small game. I expect mine to hunt (and kill if they catch them) squirrels and rabbits. Other dogs are a no-no ! Mine know I do not tolerate aggression to other dogs, regardless of their size. We are just back from a long walk in the forest where my two ran free and hunted (abortively, nothing caught) with a Cocker Spaniel. We met and chatted with lots of other dogs of all shapes and sizes and their owners . Humans stopped to chat, dogs did the normal meet, greet and sniff and there was not a single cross word. The only trainer mine have ever had is their own pack alpha - ME ! Do not let aggressive behaviour take hold. Nip it in the bud NOW.

    There are studies from 15 years ago about spaying at the wrong time during a cycle and ending up with a permanently aggressive female. But even with regular spay/neuters a great deal of hormonal change can cause many dogs to react. It is biological but still important to stay on top of behaviors so they don't become common. As for the fight...spayed, not spayed, neutered or not, it is not uncommon for dogs who have always been fine to have one fight and never get along again. There are some worrisome new research about reactive and fearful behaviors with neutered dogs. If anyone is interested, glad to share the links (too tired to fetch them tonight. Back to my normal backing up posts with links so that anyone wanting to read more can.)

    Hi Jay, welcome! Did you have your dog posted on Craig's List? I'm grateful that you found our website, and that you are looking for solutions for Trey. Giving him away before addressing his behavior just pushes his issues onto someone else, who doesn't love him like your family does. If Trey hasn't been to the doctor, you may be able to find some low-cost vet options. When the economy gets tough and we all pinch pennies. It's easy to overlook checkups for our dogs, especially when the Dr says, "let's run some tests." :eek: That has $$$ all of it, you know? In Tampa, because the vet offices are slow, they are running great specials to keep busy. Maybe you (or your wife) can call around to find someone who will give Trey a good check up without costing an arm and a leg… I'm glad to hear that your daughter is in 4th grade (versus 4 years old), because she's at an age where she can respect Trey's boundaries. I don't think a basenji would simply chomp on someone without sometime of forwarning... unless he's sleeping, and wakes up grouchy? :confused: If that's the case, as long as everyone knows, I don't see her in imminent danger. Hopefully you or your wife can spend some time reading up on the quirks of a basenji. It's one thing to visit a basenji, and another to live with them. :) Like Anne said, the basenji breed is very smart and common training methods with other dogs don't necessarily work. Does Trey get along with your lab? Are they bonding? It is a lot of change for everyone in the house, including the dog.... mutual respect and love will go a long way. :) I hope it's a happy home for all, even if times are tough. I hope we can help you out!:)
