Is this the time to get a Basenji or any dog for that matter?

  • I would like to remind people that just because we are all practicing "stay at home" please think carefully before thinking this is a good time to get a dog.... With Basenjis, puppy season is over and with responsible breeders there are no pups still available as breeders typically have prior reservations, which is a good think, in my opinion... that said, before thinking that this is a good time for a puppy or even a rescue, you need to consider this.... your decision should be what your normal day is like.... especially if you work... just because you are home now, doesn't mean that this is how it always will be... you need to consider your life style before all this started... In the past 3 months I have gotten more inquires about a puppy then in the entire past year....

  • I would think very carefully about getting a puppy - any breed. This time of year in the Northern Hemisphere you are unlikely to find a Basenji. Last winter's crop will all have been dispersed to new owners and only a very small percentage of Basenjis have a summer season.

If the reason for your question is that you are now in lockdown, at home and with time on your hands, ask yourself what the answer would be in normal times !

If you could cope with a puppy when released from lockdown and back at work - i.e. if you could have ensured the pup wouldn't have been left alone all day when things were normal, then maybe.

But if life for a puppy would have been suboptimal in those times, then no ! Wait until you can give a puppy a good life, not just now but when life returns to normal, before embarking on a (dog's) lifetime commitment -

Good luck anyway and stay safe !

  • I would say that if one had planned to get a pup before this all occurred, then perhaps it would be good timing, as it would give one the opportunity of spending more time with the pup in the crucial early days. Of course things will change and the routine will be different, but there are ways to ease into the new schedule so it isn't an abrupt shift from always being there to suddenly being absent.

Hi @elbrant the breeder that I have located is in the Ukraine. She has pure bred basenjis of different colours. Most of the litter has gone but she still has some left.

@debradownsouth He was Arrested and then he died. I will refrain from posting Horse related posts. You just did not believe me when I said Horses are taken to Great Adventure. Now regarding the Basenjis relation to Wolves: Mu dog loved the Wolves and when I would walk the Wolf and the Dog in the Park the Dogs there which included Rotties, Saint Bernards, Bull Mastiffs all pulled their owner out of the Park because Dogs instinctively fear Wolves. Thannks!

@lvoss: Also, keep in mind that most basenji puppies are born between now and the end of January so will not even be ready to pick up until late January into March so it isn't like you are going to hop on a plane tomorrow. You will have time to plan. It also doesn't have to be a long trip, 1-2 days. Exactly, when we went to Chicago/Cleveland we left Friday and came home Sunday. Had the pups been closer together we could have done it Arriving Saturday and returning Sunday

Yes, its seems to be the way, just leave something if its not convient. My family was Navy, 30 and as I am 60 old, you know that was a ways back. We took our ****er to Hawaii 2 times. Yes, expensive, but part of the family. Wish folks were more responsible, sigh, but times seem to be changing. what was deleted is spanial, co*ker…laugh.

Yes i have been very interested for a long time. Iv been in contact with a Breeder from England for a while now and they are expecting a summer litter. While iv been speaking to the breeder i feel comfortable that she will be more than helpful and is willing to all of the above. Like you said the price was the last thing on your mind, this goes for me too. I was just wondering along the lines so i could save to buy my puppy. Thanks for the help :)

If funds are an issues, you can do what I used to do before BRAT came along. Find out the vet of the family your placing him with, have the family pay you for your expenses and then take the dog to the new familys vet for the surgery to be fixed. Drop the dog off the day of the surgery and then new owners pu the dog. They get to pay the bill. That makes sure the dog is fixed, sets up a new vet record for the new dog in the family, and you don't have to pay anything out of pocket. Mostly, you know the surgery WILL BE DONE. Thanks for making sure he is fixed before rehoming. That is so important.
