Heartworm and flea prevention

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hello,
Has anybody used "Revolution" by pfizer? I gave to my puppy "heartgard" and "frontline" for fleas, since "Revolution" Stops fleas and Prevents heartworm in one application i think this is much easier, what do you suggest, should i switch?
    thanks

  • Good question! Does anyone know about this brand, Revolution?

  • I believe it is fairly new on the market… while I do give heartworm monthly, we really don't have a big flea problem. Usually only like last summer when we had the very unusal heat wave (110+) for two + wks or if cats come over the fence into the yard (and not very often....ggg)... so since I don't have to use a flea product every month, I personally would just stick to using one chemical based thing... don't like to put more on them then I have too... but the risks of heartworm out weight the possible negative effects... you can goolge Revolution and go to the mfg site to read about it...

  • Yes we use revolution on our B. It is a drop that we place on the nape of his neck and it absorbed.

  • I am using revolution this year. I have heard nothing but good things about it and I could use the added protection of the tick killer in it. We seem to be having a lot of ticks show up this year. My B's don't get a lot of fleas either-usually from the heeler but I'd rather give it to them than have them scratch all this time.

  • I'm a vet tech. revolution is a good product but it doesn't cover all species of ticks. I stick to heartguard and frontline because I have a lot of ticks with lyme disease in my area. It all really depends on your dog's exposure and how comfortable you are. Just be sure to part the fur and make sure it goes directly on the skin and no bathing/swimming for 2 days before or after.

  • I have used it for about 3 months now. Seems to be doing good so far. I was Leary at first, I'm so used to the oral heart worm preventive !! Doesn't seem like something that goes on the skin could work as well.
My Vet says it's great and she has been using it and advantage on her dogs since it came out.

I rarely have flea problems with my Basenjis -they have garlic regularly which I think may be the reason. They are around all sorts of wild animals so must be in contact with fleas at some point.

@khanis: I have NEVER heard of these legendary fleas or mosquitos…. and I am a Portland native... and have NEVER had a flea issue with my basenjis [Whippet, IG, RR, Newfs, or cats]. Our home ranges from 3-6 basenjis on average and still no problem, even with dogs that come/go for showing or boarding. The only time I have treated them [my dogs] was prior to traveling to the midwest or east coasts. During the time I lived in Portland, which is at the very northern end of the Valley and has more wind than the lower Valley, I noticed a lot fewer fleas and 'skeeters. I can understand why you haven't experienced them. Try camping on the shores of Fern Ridge sometime. Make sure you take lots of DEET. I grew up there and, man, the 'skeeters are horrible! I can remember our dogs and cats had a rough time of it, too. We were always picking fleas off them. But that's the difference between living in the city and living in the back woods. The conditions in the lower Valley are perfect for the growth of fleas and mosquitos: standing water everywhere and very few hard freezes. (Gramma lives in the "sticks" too and has lots of both in her area outside Salem.) But, again, back to the subject, she used Brewer's Yeast and had pretty good results with it.

@Ninabeana26: I use Sentinel for Dallas' heartworm meds & I give it monthly. He has only had 2 months so far but I have never noticed anything funny after giving it to him. I just place it in with his evening kibble & he's been fine every time. Sentinel is actually two medications in one. It has the active ingredient for Interceptor and the active ingredient for Program. It is supposed to protect against heartworms and fleas. If you are still having problems with fleas, I would seriously consider changing to Interceptor only so you are not giving your dog an medication that is not working and then look for a more effective flea control.

To my knowledge, dogs don't get Posion Ivy….. As far as Fleas.... while we don't have a big problem here in No. California... I do need to use flea protection.. at times.... To be on meds for heartworm is responsible... and I would never take a chance... Liver problems with Basenji is not uncommon... that to me is the biggest plus for blood work up at least once a year... especially with our old Basenjis... some as with the Kidney's starting to shut down... my 15 1/2 yr old has been Kidney failure (nothing to do with Fanconi, but just old age) for almost the last year.... we have kept her going to SUBQ fluids since we found this out... and while I would do no more then this, since she accepts the fluids well (we at this time give fluids 2 to 3x's a week...) we take each day as a bonus day until the time she is ready to cross the bridge.... As far as flea meds.... if they don't have fleas... I would not worry about it.... of couse different then meds for heartworm... since that is a mosquitos born problem...

@nala121498: I'm glad to know that he's progressing nicely and you are finding ways to adjust to it. Still keeping you guys in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery! Bless you Nala, Today has been a hard day for the whole family. Mom is having difficulty with her arthritis and the pain is very strong. I am ready with the pain meds as needed. Beeji must have gotten up full of the devil as he has been into waaaaaaaaay too many things today. We started out with the food battle. I put the mixed dry and wet into the bowl. He watched me as If he was the prince and had to say "No that doesn't suite me, take it away. Well after 20 minutes, I took up the food snacks. Anything he could reach such as rawhides etc were put away. We get dressed, leashed and ledding and are finally ready to go. We walked a double amount this morning and by the time I got him back t the house, I was exhausted but he was still pretty fiesty. We decided to head to the back yard where I can toss his floppy disk and he can chase it, growl at it, shake it in that death toss and then he flips it up and runs after it again. When we went in for lunch. He tried the begging route but Mom and I had talkd aobut how to reach him first and find a job fo him and
