Favorite Chew Toys

Basenji Talk

  • I may be getting a Basenji wiehin the next month and would like to know what some of your basenjis' favorite chew toys are. My mutt's favorite toys are a softball and a squeaky bone.

  • Mostly toys they can destroy :D but they also like the Kongs and Buster Cube

  • quality stuffed animals that they can kill, shake, and disembowel.

Kongs, hooves, knee caps, sterile bones stuffed w/peanut butter or cheese or treats, beef tendons. .. ..

In fact, if the squeaky bone is one of those kind of soft squeezeable toys – it'll be history very shortly w/a Basenji! LOL, at least with mine. Durability is key.

  • Yeah, I had one of the soft squeaky toys for about 10 minutes until it got to the back yard and my mutt tore it to shreds.

  • I think they prefer very expensive, fragile items they can distroy. Dash loves fleece but I only get them when they are on sale. He prefers the ones with the sqeaker, but once he "kills" the sqeaker he is not terribly interested. also, rawhides or anything horribly smelly:)

  • I do buy cheap stuffed toys from Wal-mart sometimes, but I find the ones I buy at dog shows seem to last longer. The name brands are Migrator and Dr. Noys, among others.

Our floor regularly looks like a massacre has just taken place. Stuffing everywhere, and if not stuffing it's legs, ears, tails, etc everywhere.

  • Sahara does not chew up her toys, in fact she is good with them, her favorite is a hedgehog round ball that I got from PetSmart, she will fetch forever with that one toy. She loves Merrick's Bully Sticks, I get the 12" ones and cut them in smaller pieces, they are beef tendon no rawhide. They are quite expensive but not too bad if you cut them into smaller pieces. She likes all the Merrick chewies, but I don't buy rawhide if I can help it. Sahara does not chew up her stuff, she had rather have mine, go figure!!!!!

  • She loves Merrick's Bully Sticks, I get the 12" ones and cut them in smaller >>pieces, they are beef tendon

LOL, well, they ain't exactly a "tendon", which is why I have hag-ups about them. It's childish, I know, but the thought just grosses me out.

    Besides,
the actual tendons I get from the vet don't stink and from what I read here, the bully sticks do. I don't want too many stinky things, so the hooves are good enough for that.

  • Be careful with the hooves… yes they do stick.. they get sharp... and there is nothing worse then getting up in the middle of the night and stepping on a hoof... talk about pain... yikes.... and also they will and do cause slab fractures of the teeth....

  • Oh yes, I've stepped on my fair share of hooves in the night, in the morning, in the afternoon… when they seem pretty well-chewed on, I toss 'em.

I see your post was back in Jan. so I hope you have your new basenji settled in. I also adopted a beasenji in Jan. She is my second. I adopted a 5 year old to be with my 3 yr. old, who had had 2 litters in the past and was bred for a 3rd one, but didn’t get pregnant. So the breeder, the same breeder our boy came from, decided to let her go to a forever home. I had to wait quite a while for her to be ready and I felt just like you. I couldn’t wait! I kept texting the breeder questions, request for photos, etc. When we picked her up she seemed comfortable with us right from the start. She has been a wonderful addition to our family, a good match for our 3yr. old boy. He’s a toughie but I think he’s met his match with her. He’s so much happier with his own friend. They love to be together. I hope your new pup is adjusting just as well as mine. Have fun. I think they make us laugh every day. Yes, you have to be on your toes with these guys, you have to make them a big part of your life. They can never just be a fixture. They are work but it’s worth it all. 3 years ago I was a newbie but not anymore, and I’m loving this wild ride.

:D Wizard your mention of Gossy hiding food made me laugh. We lost Benji in Feb and the other day i was cleaning behind the cushions on the leather settee, and yes i dont do it very often :D Theres more to life than doing that :D Anyway i found ?4.31, a lighter, a mobile phone and loads and loads od dog biscuits that Benji had hid, it was a bitter sweet moment. He also once hid a smelly old bone under my husbands pillow :D

Thanks all for the responses. I was just curious 'cause I'd never had a dog or known a dog that did this. Someone told me it could be allergies. But with the responses here and the fact that it is only an ocasional thing, probably not. Just a new dog thing I never knew they did.:) Didn't know cats did it either!

The B I am fostering came with a de-stuffed…um...thing (I really couldn't tell you what it once was). When she doesn't get her way she will BAROOOOOO at us as loud as she can and then grab the stuffy and shake, shake, shake it and throw it in our general direction. If she could say "so there', I know she would.

@Gooby: When I walk Goober in the park I have to contantly correct him when he tries to eat goose poop. I trained him with a Mr. Hanky the Christmas Poo doll. IMO, now would be a good time for Gooby and you to attend a Puppy Class. They will teach you commands like "leave it" and many more obedience commands followed up with a very high value treat. One much too yummy than that old goose poop! :)
