Loki went swimming!

    I've said before that we live on a small lake and Loki hasn't generally been too keen on going in it though he loves to go in the lake at the dog park. Well yesterday the ducks came by and we tossed out some food for them which brought them closer to the yard. And not only did Loki go in, but he actually began swimming after them! Even went out passed the dock, came back to where the grass is taller, hid and waited for them to come back before swimming after them again. He likes to go in water but has never really liked swimming out where he couldn't touch, but that wasn't a problem. He was so intent on getting those ducks. That prey drive has finally kicked in; it used to be that the ducks would be in the yard and he would go out, lay down and stare at them.

    Unfortunately I do not have any video or photos of his swimming event. As I was coming back outside after grabbing my phone to take some video I slipped and ended up breaking my ankle :(

    OMG Tana, I'm so sorry about your ankle! How will you chase after Loki now???
    Love the story about him chasing the ducks and swimming after them, he is such a great little guy.
    Take care of that ankle, keep it elevated when you can.

    He went in again yesterday when my husband fed the ducks again. I, of course, was on the couch and didn't get the benefit of watching him swim after the ducks :(

    Anne, Jeremy works nights 4 days a week. Though he sleeps during the day, if he walks Loki in the morning and again before he leaves for work, Loki will be pretty easy for me to handle during the evening and night. I just can't drive to take him to the dog park during the day as it's my right ankle, so that's a bummer. I was hoping to get over to Tampa again either this month or next, but now I'm not sure when we'll make it.

    Glad you have a routine that allows you to stay off your feet! We were talking about you & Loki today, wishing Loki was there as Theo was so playful, he even got my 13 year old Eddie to play with him. Heck, he got everyone to play with him!
    Take care of yourself, maybe some of us can make it to FP Park, it looks great.

    Hi @Vesna, it’s interesting you say that about the spay. Our tri-color actually just got spayed this week and her coat shed before that. I noticed small amount of black hair growing in where she shed, hopefully it grows back. What phase is your tri-color at? Did this just happen?

    How exciting for you Chealsie508. I would like to comment on the old wives tale about calcium. Supplementing a puppies diet with extra calcium in the hope that it will build up the ear cartilage is not scientifically or biochemically valid. Adding calcium above the usual balance of that mineral in the diet has actually been shown to cause growth problems in some dogs. Do not add calcium to the diet in the misguided hope that it will strengthen the cartilage. EVERY PUPPY IS DIFFERENT. For example, the two extremes of my native imported pups were my boy's ears were standing straight up when he was ~10 weeks old; and one of my females had one ear flopping until she was ~5 months old. But, it did go up on its own and stayed up. So, look at your pups pedigree and don't sweat it. As I have come to understand, the general rule is that if the ears are standing or have been standing by between 3-5 months (the time teething starts), they will come back up after the adult teeth are in. Yes, calcium is one of the building blocks of cartilage growth. The body uses calcium as needed and when teeth and bone growth are developing, the calcium isn't being used for nonessentials like the cartilage at the base of the ear frame. Supplementing calcium is NOT a good idea and can actually be harmful. Be forewarned that most over-the-counter calcium supplements are NOT absorbed by the body and are a waste of money and time. With calcium that is absorbed, too much is given. Calcium will settle in joints when there is too much in the body, setting your pup up for bone spurs, hip problems, arthritis and other problems when they are older. If you really feel that you need to do something, provide natural calcium found in bones. I would strongly advise that you talk this over with your veterinarian. To be fair, you really need to give your dog until the age of 8-9 month range before you even think about the ears.

    @gemurray: I love the pictures! Roo looks very handsome in the life vest! We got a life jacket for Samantha after she showed interest in being on the boat. We had her out on a sunfish in a light breeze and stayed close to shore. After that we've had her out in a canoe a couple of times. One time I was in the canoe and my daughters were on a paddle boat. Samantha wanted to go to them, so she jumped out of the boat (with life jacket on) but on the way out she went in head first! Even though she was paddling furiously, (Basenji feet don't seem like the optimum swimming feet!) she turned around and I pulled her up in the canoe. Now that it's warmer I'm looking forward to taking her out in the Lido. The MC looks like a fun boat! Where do you sail? We sail mostly at Clinton Lake in IL. We are members of the CLSA (Clinton Lake Sailing Association). We sail competitively on most weekends. We also travel locally for competitions at Regatta's held within a 200 mile range of our home location. I am the fleet captain at our Lake for the MC Scows. The MC Scow is the fastest growing style in One Design boats. We are always learning in hopes that we can be more competitive. Jason and Miranda

    My Basenji would never be able to do it. She loves to swim, but isn't that nice with other dogs. My Husky mix would totally love it though. :) We'd have to use a crane to get him back out. I have a "doggy swim day" almost everyday. The shelter I work with built a lake out back, and on the hot days we let all the dogs go play in it.
