  • Hi! New here .. and new to what I think is a Basenji mix! We adopted Charlie from a kill shelter about two weeks ago. He was listed as a terrier mix & I have been trying to figure him out, but wasn't having much luck until today. I started looking up breeds by color and came across Basenjis! The traits are totally him. We actually always tell everyone how quiet he is & very different from our chihuahua , so I thought it was funny to find that Basenjis are known as the 'barkless dogs'. I am thinking he is a Basenji/Dachshund mix because he has short little legs and at 7 months old , he's only 11 lbs.

What do you guys think? Basenji mix?

Hi everyone, Thanks for all of your replies! Rex just had his first vet visit (first with me at least), and he was given a clean bill of health. The vet that I saw also agrees with a lot of you that he looks like a Min Pin more than a Basenji, but he is likely still mixed with something because he's a bit too big to be a pure Min Pin. I've looked at a few DNA Dog Breed tests online, and they seem to range in price and in quality. It seems like some of the cheaper (~$50) tests are fake, but they go all the way up to almost $250 for the higher quality ones. Do any of you have experience with these DNA tests / have a brand you found reputable? I'll be sure to post the results of any of the tests with this forum! Thanks again, and Rex is doing really great in his new home!! [image: 1559586518913-img_3707-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586546977-img_3720-resized.jpg] [image: 1559586568474-img_3708-resized.jpg]

Thank you Debra. Sayblee is a very good looking dog and I love the way adult Basenjis bodies fill out as adults. I like how the brown goes down her legs too giving the appearance of white socks. I will definitely keep your words in mind should I see any signs of aggression forming as he matures. I can only pray I luck out and he continues to get along well.

@basenjimamma There is nothing quite as dog-friendly as a Volvo Estate for transporting Basenjis ! Mine have always ridden to shows in them - two large crates can accommodate 6 Basenjis in comfort. I am on my 5th, I think - could be my 6th. The last one did 216,000 miles. That was the square tank-like version. The current 10 year old V70 is overall broader, but without so much space inside, which means a single crate is all it will take. But it is enough for my age-depleted pack.

@sharronhurlbut: Neat action shots. Thanks for sharing…bet they were all tired when you got them home. Yes!! really tired!!!!!!!! They slept almost whole sunday too :D @Kananga: You know I had the same issue the other weekend at the dog park. Kananga was very anti-social and growling a tad. I realized it was because of motion-sickness from the long car ride (I found out on the ride back…. unfortunately). So it made sense he didn't want to play. He was feeling ill. Happy to see Chafuko and Buana having fun with the other basenjis. :D It's possible, we often drive very long distance, he never acts ill, but it's a good explanation for his act!!! Thanks!
