Lunatic Basenji in CT!

Member Introductions
  • Hello All! we are new to this forum. I adopted my crazy Luna (actually she chose me!), from a local animal shelter nearly 6 months ago. I knew nothing about the Basenji breed and she is still slowing teaching me… ;) Luna is my first dog and wants to make sure that she is the ONLY child in the house. So far I have discovered that she loves to chase squirrels, tease birds and really hates cats. As for other dogs, she snarls, howls and lowly barks at them (she complains alot!) but after I scold her, she sometimes will let them approach. Sometimes she is a lot of work but I love my little 5yr Luna!

  • I think by having a basenji or basenji mix for your first dog, what you are really getting is a whole semester of teaching in summer school condensed format!!!! Congrats on your new girl! She looks happy to have her own backyard! Stay tuned to the forum for 'mucho' information!

@tanza said in Benji the Basenji: It is important to know the health of the pup and/or their sire/dam Well said ! It may not seem important now - you can say you will never show or need to register your Basenji - but in a few year's time you may find you wish you had known the health test results of the parents. By constant checking and careful breeding, many lines have obviated the most devastating scourges, but they are still around. Better to know for sure if your puppy is tested and imperative to make certain his or her parents were.

@nouno: His parents are also in Cyprus. His mother is 4 years old. Did not have any problems. His father is 2 years old and also did not have any problems. Not yet. Is too expensive as I have to send all the test to the USA. But I will get through with it as long as I am able to. Age that Fanconi can show up is from usually 3 years all the way till over 10 years

HI, we don't have many breeders in New Zealand but luckily there was one that had a website which came up when I did a search on the web and was given information about more breeders here. If you do find a breeder please make sure they are a responsible breeder and do all the health testing etc. Lot's of info on this forum regarding this and maybe someone can help further. Good luck with your search. Jolanda and Kaiser

It was actually the vet tech wasn't the most brilliant thing on the planet… needless to say I found another vet the next week and they think she might have some bulldog in her... what a mix. I believe that she definitely could have some bulldog in her judging by the way she lays around the house.
