A basenji finds his purpose

Basenji Talk
  • @Kipawa:

Does this mean that you are thinking of breeding in the future?

Hi Fran! "Apollo", as we are possibly going to use as his call name…will be a show dog. Me and Sarah will not be the ones showing him at this time, Therese is going to do it for us. We haven't yet worked out all the details but he will be allowed to continue in Kevin and Therese's breeding program. Basenjis are very special to us and we are excited to be a bigger part of Kevin and Therese's "family".

Unfortunately at this point we are still waiting to find out which boy it will be...has to be a good fit all-around. There has been talk of possibly getting one of the "men in black" boys Therese will be getting from Lisa in CA. The waiting is so hard!

I hope everyday reveals improvement for Darrel. Give Kipawa a huge B hug from us.

Looks can be so deceiving- here is an article of a woman who adopted a rescue dog in N.J. Dog looks like a basenji - even her vet thought it might be basenji. She did an Embark DNA test - no basenji. Turned out the dog was a mixture of Mountain Cur, Rat Terrier, Beagle, and Boston Terrier. link text

Thank you for thinking of the puppy's needs. Please, contact the breeder first if you signed a contract. Responsible breeders have contracts, nearly all requiring you contact them if things don't work out. They may have other homes waiting already. If the breeder sold you the puppy without a contract, then there are a few here looking for a puppy that might be interested. Make sure you get references and vet references so that your puppy goes to a home, not someone wanting to use him for breeding in some puppymill. If you can't find a good home and you are willing to place without being paid, BRAT can be helpful in screening and getting into a good home in most cases. California has a separate basenji rescue also... http://www.basenjirescue.com/ ... however, I have no idea if they do fanconi testing. If your pup does not have clear parents, or at least one clear, please get him tested before you place him. A home getting a dog with a genetic disorder is more likely to abandon it if they don't know upfront what they are getting. If you have the parents' registration numbers or names, it is easy to verify if they were tested.

There's nothing like a basenji in the works, from the way they instinctively lay with their had on the bum looking the other way ( I've never met a B that doesn't) to the way you KNOW they all rub on wet towels or play bow…it's all very endearing and in this breed you often identify traits that they all have, an insight into their genetics and their behaviors. I've never enjoyed a breed so much.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
