• Dan, thanks for this post.
I have found that buying human grade treats is really the way to go for me.
    Laugh, I mean for my 2 b's.

Nice.:eek:..why is it so hard to make sure Salmonella and E.Coli don't get involved in pet and human foods and treats? I don't understand..it isn't rocket science, it is a matter of healthy and clean work ethics..

Majority of the times we have issues with salmonella or E.Coli in human foods, is because workers are not following proper guidelines for personal hygiene, after bathroom breaks..

  • I don't give any of these or raw hide chew bones because of choking. I tried a hoove once and he snapped off some really sharp pieces that had he swallowed them would have been dangerous so I immediately took it away.He only has a couple of large Nylabones to chew on. At least anything that breaks off is very, very tiny and that he spits out.

I used to give my dogs these, or at least the pigs ears, but now, since i am trying to keep their diet clean and raw, they are clearly out, so yes, Nylabones or raw shank bones are it in our house.

  • I agree. Hooves aren't good for our little guys - I tried them, too, and my hound/terrier who has a cast-iron stomach was throwing up pieces of the hoof.

  • I tried giving my previous 2 Basenjis pigs ears when they were young back in the mid nineties and they chewed them up fast into pieces and swallowed them so I stopped. What's the value in that?

  • I avoid these as well with my B. They never seem to be a good mix with Basenjis.

  • Has anyone else noticed since the poisonings 3 years ago that dog treat packages don't tell where the treats were made just that they are "distributed by …." That's a sure bet they were MADE IN CHINA.

I can usually find this information, just have to look really, really hard for that MADE IN CHINA. The last dog treats I bought had MADE IN THE USA!!! In giant letters across the front. Much easier to spot if the product is made in the US

  • The pigs ears and Hooves don't come packaged where I shop at Pet Club. They are in huge open bins.

  • I picked up at a pig-ear factory in Denver one time. It's no wonder to me why there is trouble with these dog treats. There is little regulation over dog treats, so refrigeration isn't as strict. That place reeked of rotten meat! AJ can't eat pork or rawhide. He gets sick from them every time.

Also, the hooves that are used for treats sometimes lay in the field for a few days attached to a dead cow before they are processed. It's nasty!
