Where did the cube of butter go?

Basenji Talk
  • I'm getting forgetful in my older years, but I was sure I set out a cube of butter for baking. Maybe not. Maybe I just thought about it and didn't actually do it. ((You will get like this one day, too!))

Bailey, my year old Basenji, and the old Shep female were in my office being way too quiet. They usually don't pal around together. I stepped in the office and Basenji Bailey gobbled something down as fast as she could, and Kira was licking the rug. I couldn't figure out what they were eating?

I looked all over the kitchen to see if something was missing - didn't see anything unusual.

Later, I decided to take a cube of butter out of the refrig and set it aside before baking - then I noticed that the new box of butter had one cube missing.

If you are a Basenji owner, you know the rest of this story!

  • Every dog I've ever taken care of loves butter.

The elderly Jack Russell I used to pet sit considered a butter wrapper the best treat ever - he'd lick one clean. When he was near the end of his life, the only way his owner or I could get him to take pills was to put them in butter.

  • my dachshund Gus ate a whole 4 oz stick of butter once, boy did he get sick..I thought we would have to pump his stomach, but once he threw up…he felt like a new dog..
Otis on the other hand ate 30+ cinnamon rolls, fresh out of the oven, they were still too hot for us to eat..not so much for him..
We are currently painting our livingroom and my daughter just caught him drinking the pan, his whole nose, inside of his mouth and chin is a beautiful shade of "colorado sand"..d..n dog..

  • :D:D:D Naughty Bailey

  • Yummmmm, greasy slimy poop coming at you! LOL

Bailey didn't get sick and didn't even have runny pooh - she has a cast iron stomach.

Oh wow, Otis was certainly hungry…

Some dogs live to eat. :D

  • Vicki,
I am glad she didn't get sick, the poop Gus had was unreal, never seen anything like it..
Yes Otis is a junk food junkie..I guess since he eats raw, when he steals it better be good tasty, not so good for you food..

Today Otis is not feeling hip at all, he wouldn'ty eat his breakfast and he just threw up twice on our nice newish dogbed…great..

Poor baby, and it is his 9 mo old birthday today...

Wizard, thats pretty much what I was hoping to hear. In regards to training, I meant along the lines of enforcing good behavior, like sitting down to have his leash taken off or waiting for a release to eat, not digging at the furniture. Stuff like that. I don't expect my roommate to "obedience train" my pup. Overall I have a lot of trust in him, we have lived together for 3 years and been friends for the past 7 years. Even if he doesn't have a vested interest in the dog, he has a pretty vested interest in our friendship. Khani, I think Jean is in South Africa right now, and I would prefer to have him stay home if possible. It looks like everything will work out. Also, Both Jean and Kyle spoke Highly of you and your dogs. Thanks again for the advice everyone

Tillo doesn't like the rain as well. We pick him up, and put him on the grass. Than it's ok and he will walk for 5 - 10 minutes. Since monday we bring him to the 'baby'sitter during daytime. She didn't know about the 'picking him up', so he didn't want to go out.. and peed in the house…. ;)

@YodelDogs: If Chance continues his interest in mounting and sniffing Kiya's "female parts", there could be something else going on. It is not unusual for female pups to get puppy vaginitis. This ailment produces aromas that male dogs mistake for being in season. (People can't smell it.) Left untreated, the male dog will aggravate the female so much that fights can occur. I use an ecchinasea/goldenseal capsule daily, opened and mixed with something "smelly" to hide the bitter taste. The problem is always resolved within one week. I am not a veterinarian though so you should discuss this ailment when you take Kiya to your vet. And Robyn is right, this could be the problem also, however in knowing Chance and seeing his behavior with other dogs, I think much of this is that he is just very inmature for his age and never really learn "proper" play with other dogs… he is not aggressive to other dogs, he is just inappropriate with some of his antics.... Kiya, given the chance will put him in his place... but I would think this house is going to get really loud with Basenji sounds...

What I tell my puppy owners is that if the puppy will be crated during the day, then it SHOULD sleep with them at night. What is the sense of having a companion that is in a crate during the day, and in the crate at night? I had Caesar crated during the day while I was at work and at night because I had Beta who was the same age, but completely an out of control basenji due to her rescue background. They were crated together. Neither ever complained. Caesar complained as a puppy. Each situation is different and unique I suppose.

@felakuti: our felakuti goes barooooooo when he is very very happy. :) we decided to get that little female basenji at Debbie's Petland, the one with the 5 toes..We have named her Queen Nyahbinghi after a warrior queen of the 19th century in Uganda…her call name is Nyah. :) so now we have two lovedoveys. :) Good luck with your pup….. hopefully you got her for a reasonable price... I would be interested to know if AKC papers came with her... and what the breeding is, if available.... also would hope that with the time she spent in the Pet Store, this will show them that a Basenji is not a good business decision.....
