Otis finished his first Obedience Training..

Basenji Training
  • …so we had to brag.. Otis is the first Basenji to ..(according to the trainer) leave with anything in his backpocket..She was amazed at how much he was willing to do and show off..sometimes, but most importantly he did it on Diploma Day..yeah..I am very proud and slightly astonished myself. He learned of course how to sit (on command), down, loose leash walking, shake and high five and ...my favorite..leave it (and he does..:D). They also learned how to say hi to a new dog as well as stay. We have been working hard on the commands since "school" let out and he is improving even more. On monday we start the next level class, so more tricks and treats to come..

He would not wear his graduation cap, like all the other dogs did, no way, he even bucked like a young steer when we tried to put it on...

look Ma, I am shaking my paw..

The funniest thing about the shake and high five is that now he will walk around and just high five your leg or anywhere on your body if you have something he wants..and the best one..he sits under the birdcage we have with his paw in the air, looking at you like…I am shaking...can I please have them??

  • Congratulations Otis!!! That's awesome Petra! Those are great shots too! He's really doing so well thanks to your hard work.

  • Way to go Otis nice job.

  • Congrats Otis!! That's great!

  • Congrats! I'm sure he'll do well in his next class too.

  • Awesome! Go Otis! Can't wait to hear what more brilliant things he's doing soon. :)

  • Thanks all for his well wishes, he might need them. So far he is eager, if treats are available, to learn new things, so I am very hopeful.

@elbrant I hope it will arrive today and I will let you know of its success or otherwise. We will try it out immejutely it arrives. Mku slept with me last night. He slept like a log. I didn't, but at least it gave Paul a rest. The diffuser is supposed to diffuse comforting pheronomes. I like the idea of changing it to encourage eating etc. You could be onto a winner there !

Just a suggestion: When you see him "misbehaving" by chewing on 'less than ideal' items, offer him one of his toys and use the word "trade". In other words, 'chew on this instead', and when he accepts the toy - praise him. And when you see him get the toy on his own, praise him again. It could help him understand that certain toys are just for those times when you want to "rip someone's head off*". (*not meant literally, only in doggy world play)

@Kosuzu: I will get into agility when he is a little older, his bones are still too immature for that yet. I would also like to get Khalani into becoming a "therapy" dog as he has a beautiful nature, He can't be assessed for that until he is at least 18 months old. You must tell me more about the "skateboard", does he ride it? Have you ever videoed your agility, I'd love to see that. There are a few youtube videos of Zest! doing agility. Just seach "Zest Agility" and the r/w little basenji is mine. Those are all from her Novice days. She's now in Excellent. We've had quite a few set backs, but she has achieved her excellent agility titles in AKC. You can see my other 2 here: https://www.basenji.org/BasenjiU/Activities/Agility/AOb/stacles.html All but the dogs on the table are mine. Zest is also the star of the Agility Manuevers videos. Hopefully, you'll be able to find a local agility class. There are lots of foundation work you can do with puppies before you start doing jumps and weaves. The other two (Digital the brindlewonderkid and Jet the trying) are retired, but have certainly done a lot. Therapy work is so rewarding! You'll love it. Z and I are off to the Alzheimer's facility tomorrow. Both my boys also really loved it.

Deb, that sounds like a great class, did you take it locally? I would be interested in taking that class!

@Chealsie508: Thanks Pat and Lisa, I'll look into that. Another question though- there is a novice rally event happening on the 6th in MA near us, would that be something I could take Oakley to?? Thanks for your thoughts Rally events are AKC events… The club premium will usually note that any dogs that are not entered should not be on the show grounds. That said, many of us take puppies and young dogs for socialization. If this event is outdoors, that makes it much easier, since there is usually lots of room. Indoors, not so much because it is a smaller area and during OB or Rally the "crowd" and other dogs should/need to be quiet as to not disturb the dog that is working. If Oakley does well around other dogs/people (being quiet..ggg) then I would say go for it! Maybe not if indoors until you know how he might react.

Shelley, You are right, the motivation "has" to be there, or it probably won't work. This is the first time I have taken OC with any of my dogs so I am sceptical, but highly motivated…my B will get this done.. My westie, Bogus never even learned how to crate properly...he kept on pooping in the crate and then sleep in it...nothing bothered him, noot even stinking like a dog pile. The crate I used for him was actually so small, after a lot of trials and errors and he still pooped..that is when we gave up. He did great with puppy pads..for peeing, not for pooping, that he did right next to the pad, like it wasn't supposed to get dirty or something..silly dog. He is not with us anymore, he just passed in late march.
