Loose stools

    I've been having an ongoing issue with Kananga having loose stools. He's healthy according to the vet and it's determined that it's an anxiety related issue. He doesn't always have loose stool. If he doesn't relieve himself on a timely basis (getting backed up), the stool will come out normal, but on a normal routine they tend to be a bit loose at times.

    I came across Eagle Pack Holistic Solution when I was picking up some food for Kananga this evening. I figured it might be worth a try to see if this helps solve the issue.

    Has anyone had experience with Eagle Pack products? They must be good if this pet supply store carries them (they are very picky about what they stock) but I have no a clue how their products perform with Basenjis in particular. This seemed like a better approach than trying Purina's FortiFlora, as this appears to be an all-natural product. It was only $11 so I figured why not try it out.

    I have said in the past here, that raw canned pumpkin, unsweeted, works wonders for bowel issues.
    It's not expensive, and my dogs love it. Give it a try.

    In concept it sounds good…I'm trying some FOS (prebiotic) with my dogs to see if it helps with their digestion. Whole Dog Journal just had an article on the subject. Inulin is a prebiotic, and possibly the probiotics could help...you would have to consistently give it to him so that the "good" bacteria can build up in sufficient quantity. But who knows if it will solve the particular problem you are having until you give it a try. Pumpkin might work better like Sharron said. Give something a try. Good luck!

    And my soapbox speech..."all-natural" is not necessarily better or safer. These products are not regulated so it's difficult to know the quality of them.

    It's on my list of things to try. I'm not sure if he'll eat it. He's very picky when it comes to any type of food.

    I have/had the same problem. i do the pumpkin and it has REALLY HELPED/ i also give imodium (7.5ml) mixed with peanutbutter and pumpkin. it helps BIG TIME!!!! i always mix the spoon of pumpkin with a tablespoon of peanutbutter. my REALLLY PICKY eater gobbles it right up. it did not work over nite, it took a few days. and it that did not do it i give the ocassional imodium… sometimes takes 2 doses in one day but it sure works. and it is anxiety that causes his runny stooles. there are also very inexpensive anxiety pills you can give to get a grip on it.

    Thanks for the tips. What anxiety pills are you referring to? I was thinking it might make sense to attack this issue with an anti-anxiety approach as well.

    The good news is I am already seeing improvement with his stools. I started him on this stuff yesterday and this morning he did not have runny stools at all. I'm hoping this will kick start a proper digestion for him.

    Otis sometimes battles loose stool as well and I will give him the pumpkin remedy, it usually work great, if for some reason it doesn't I give him Slipper Elm bark in liquid form as well as Fortiflora. The slipper elm works great and is natural, the brand I have is Animals Apawthecary's Slipper Elm..The Fortiflora he pas prescribed a few months ago, when he got so sick on his Metcam that he was prescribed due to his car accident, I still give him some of that every few weeks, for a day or two..he seems to do really good on it. Otis is on the raw diet and his system is definitely more sensitive then my other non b's, so he has diarrhea more frequently than them. This remedies keep his system in check.

    My Basenji had this problem on and off for years before I finally found a good solution. I actually just posted about it elsewhere in here so I'm going to attempt to quote it in here. Let's hope it works lol. @mandi2doors: Copper, my oldest, has always had a sensitive stomach and would get diarrhea out of the blue all the time, so badly that he would have blood dripping from his rear. It freaked me out the first few times it happened! The vet always tried to prescribe an antibiotic but it never helped. The way I always got rid of it was to cook a pound of ground beef (rinsed), mix with a cup of cooked white rice, a cup of cottage cheese, and a cup of plain yogurt. You feed it for about 3-4 days (I always gave him about a cup and a half a day) and then start introducing their dry food back in. A friend on another forum gave me this concoction years ago and it worked perfectly for years. Almost two years ago he got diarrhea and any time I would stop feeding the mixture it would come back. I finally consulted a holistic vet and she said I could continue feeding the mixture but needed to add some veggies to it for fiber, or I could change his dry food. She said to avoid chicken, wheat, soy, and corn. She also recommended feeding a probiotic/prebiotic several times a week in addition to two other supplements, Gastriplex and Moducare (both by Thorne). He's been on Taste of the Wild now, which is grain free (I buy the fish variety but they also have a bison/venison as well as a lamb), and and has had no problems. I'm very careful about the ingredients in the treats I give him now and have had NO diarrhea problems since changing his diet, which is absolutely wonderful!     Puppy soft stools

    Glory has been with me almost two months - she is a little over 3 months old. I have switched her from a puppy food that was high in beef which she was eating when she came to us to a food that has chicken and vegetables. The soft stool doesn't bother her - there is never a sense of urgency to go - she only has a soft stool about twice maybe three times a day. She has gained almost 9 pounds since she came to us - she was very underweight and very young. Right now she weighs just under 16 pounds. We're doing stool testing every 2 weeks and except for the very first test, they are coming back O.K. I'm concerned that she may not be processing the nutrition from her food or that she will have chemical imbalances because of the loose stools. Am I worrying for nothing?

    Viruses and bacteria can persist on the ground, in the air, on various surfaces for differing amounts of time depending on the nature of the beast (or bug as it were) so there may not have to be dog-to-dog or even dog-to-kid contact. Hand washing and shoe removal are always good ideas but there may not be much you can do about it. On the positive side, people and dogs too usually don't get reinfected with the same bug once they get over it the first time as their immune systems are now prepared for a second bout. Unless Jass or Keoki are immune-suppressed in any way, they ought to be fine here shortly.

    @tanza: I have not… So I would say it is just due to shedding... they do get undercoat on the tail too, so would not be uncommon Good to know! Thanks :)

    @massagemom3: I'm starting to think Sally needs testing. I potest the question, on how to test Sally. She squats LOW…... so I'm going to leave her in the kitchen and hold her off from peeing for awhile today, and get her excited to test her urine! hahahahaa..sorry but I can't think of anything else. hehehehe... I also think I'm going to check with the vet about testing her there as well. She won't eat very much, drinks a lot, and is shedding way too much, and I noticed her back legs shaking yesturday...not too bad but enought to notice. Good luck with your B..Keep us posted. Is Sally a mix? I seem to remember she might be? And how old is she? Again I would take her to the Vet, they can test immediately for sugar in the urine and/or blood… and also check her for UTI with a urine culture....
