Newly adopted B and Interceptor

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Hello – I gave my newly adopted B a dose of Interceptor this morning w/his morning meal. This evening he had runny stools - all over the carpet - and I'm wondering if the heartworm meds could cause the runny stools. His foster gave him heartworm meds on June 29th - I have noticed some butt scooting this week and suspected he may have worms. Also, he started eating dirt this week.

The young fella will be going to the vet for a check-up, soon.

What is your experience with Interceptor and young rescue dogs?

I use Interceptor for the other five dogs; they do well on the medication and are not plagued with parasites.

It is 2 a.m. and I am shampooing carpets!!!

  • Are his anal glands full? That could be why he's scooting..

  • Vicki, first off I am sorry about your beauty sleep being interupted by a carpet emergency, that is never fun. I have had dogs in the past on Intercepter and never had any problems. Maybe he does have worms or he needs his analglands checked on. Could you get him some canned pumpkin? just a 1 tsp or so should firm the stools up.

  • I didn't think about his anal glands. You are so right! Yes, pumpkin is on the menu for tomorrow. Rocky was okay today, but I noticed he was scooting on the tile floor?! When Rocky came here to live, I changed his food from IAMS to Wellness. He has been eating raw green beans, too.

I finished doing carpets at 4:30 a.m. Decided while the dogs were sleeping it was the best time to clean carpets. zzzzzzzzz - to bed early tonight.

  • I remember years ago when my past 2 Bs slept with me and once in a great while at about 2am I start hearing that heaving sound and then puke right in or on the bed. So I used to keep news paper by the side of the bed and if I heard that I would quick slide it under the dog.

  • Imodium! when ever there is a loose stool. it is awesome..

Ah yes, that's a lovely sound to wake up to. I remember going through that a couple times until I realized I needed to feed my B some kibble before bedtime (empty stomach issue overnight).

  • Very good idea, Dan. I haven't had that happen in a while, but you don't ge a whole lot of warning before it lands in your lap..or bed..

@mnbadger - I have not had any experience with that (in 30+ yrs of raising Basenjis) but I would say nothing different

My "aging" dogs are fed TasteOfTheWild kibble topped with a bit of wet food (variety of good brands) or a raw medallion (duck or pheasant) and with a fair amount of water so its kind of soupy (vet suggestion). Their weight hasn't changed and my vet is very happy with their condition. He also does a CBC every year on them for monitoring purposes, which I'm happy about. I'm real skittish now with essential oil usage. A couple of friends who are into that got me started using them on my dogs but mine started having bad reactions (Teddy's allergies went berserk and he scratched off a lot of fur before I got it under control again). I do use a botanical flea/tick spray but even there one has to be very careful - I tried one that had cedar and cinnamon oil in it and it caused weird shedding and scratching.

Typically I have also advised those with dogs that 'appear' to have fanconi but are not basenjis or are mixes - to also have their vet fax the labs to Steve Gontos - he seems to have a handle on the chemistry of the disease in general that is helpful to those no B people

My Nika's eye got cloudy to the point of flicking your finger at it got no response then the eye turned blood red. Went to the eye vet and it turns out the lens inside the eye slipped. I had to give her other eye these very expensive eye drops called Xalatan or Travatan that kept the pressure down and the pupil small but even then the lens was moving around a little.

@DiegosMom: I'm so happy the cheek swab test is available.. I moved and changed vets and haven't gotten Meeka to the vet to draw the blood.. I just ordered my test kit though, so much easier then collecting and shipping blood! I think BRAT and other rescue orgs need to make sure all adopters know how easy it is to test for this now, and should really encourage adopters to do it.. Amen to that….. BRAT does need to (IMO) do the test... or at the very least explain about the test and how to get it done....
