Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Last week we received the test swabs from the OFA and this morning we took the test!

Smart and awake as we were, we put Buana?s stuff on the card with Chafuko?s name…
We?re glad we could change the sticker easily...
We sure took enouch saliva of both but the purple circle became only a little bit white... (they say it has to become whitish not white)
We sure we took really enough..
We brought the whole packet to the post office, so we knew for sure it's taken good care of.

So, now we have to wait...
That's really the difficult part... both parents of the boys are tested clear but it's exciting!

  • The waiting is the hard part! I posted another 2 off last week. I'm not quite as nervous as I was last time although I do still feel like a kid waiting for Christmas! :D

  • Check on their website under your account as it will tell you when they have received it and the test results. You should have had an account set up when you paid on line. The results will also be mailed to you as a certificate. It took about 5 days for mine to arrive from CA and by the 11th the results were posted in the account.

    Thanks!

There is an account, I checked it to see if the test were send off to me :)
The postman said to us, it costs a few days to arrive at OFA.. (he thought it could last over a week  thanks to the dutch mail service)

  • Ofa received our swabs!!

Now it?s waiting for the results!

  • Cool, the wait sucks, but it will be done in no time..we got Otis' results back in about 2 weeks..so not to long..

  • What is OFA? I hope this is a good thing you guys sound excited about it. :)

The Fanconi test kits are handled through OFA and the results are posted on their website. They also handle a lot of other health testing for dogs. It's a handy site if you are getting a puppy as you can research the health history of the sire and dam and their pedigrees.

And OFA is the place were all Fanconi test results are posted. Information on Fanconi is www.basenjihealth.org
Anyone breeding needs to be testing their Basenjis "before" breeding….. there is no excuse to ever produce another Fanconi Affected pup

That is a huge relief about the cheek swab…She absolutely HATED having her blood drawn and has been mistrustful of the vet and vet techs ever since. I didn't not realize that there were many errors in the original test. I stopped frequenting this forum shortly after I had her test done and haven't really heard anything from the basenji world until I got the e-mail. I will definitely get this re-test done as soon as possible and will pick up some strips tomorrow so I can start testing her urine. Thankfully she has not been showing any signs of poor health and has always done well on checkups.

Kathy, I sure didn't mean to indicate it isn't a godsend or fantastic! Of course it is. I just meant… well as the Arabs say, Trust in G-d but tie your camel. Get the testing, use it to help guide breeding, retest if necessary, but keep doing the strip test. It's an easy if annoying process that protects your dog against testing errors or human errors.

The fanconi test needs to be ordered from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html Have you talked to Nilo's breeder about health testing. Without pedigree information his tests alone don't provide a very complete picture since disorders like PRA are late onset.

I have the same idea Maya. I have heard that there are very few carriers left in the world, and that the disease appears to have nearly been erradicated, BUT, to my way of thinking, if there are even a few carriers left in the world, then Im sure I would be the "lucky" one who would put carrier to carrier, so testing for me was VERY important… Im actually a bit anal about testing anyway :D

And chances are that your vet will tell you that there is no test. Just because it has been available for nearly two years does not mean that they know it is now here. You can do the fanconi tests without seeing a vet at all. Finger's crossed both your Bs come back NOT affected.

@etzbseder: Thanks, I've seen that before, but forgot about it. After looking at that, it shows that my answer would be: Clear pups ONLY means that neither parent is affected, and that does not change with multiple clear pups. The only thing that shows any determination of the parents is a test of the parent themselves (or if their grandparents are clear). correct. The more clear pups (with no affecteds or carriers) you had from the breeding of the same two animals, the more LIKELY it is that the parents are clear…but it certainly would not be a for sure.
