Happy Dog Food

Basenji Feeding
  • Recently, I have been trying out some alternatives to my dog's evening canned food since at $2 a can it adds up pretty quickly. Last week while at the Davis Food Co-op, I found a food called Happy Dog, http://www.happydogfood.com/ and decided to give it try. I tried the small Original formula and added ground chicken that they sell at the Co-op. Last week when I made it Nicky was the only one making a fuss while they had to wait for it to cook and then cool This week all four are going nuts because they know it is their dinner that is cooking and they apparently want it NOW!!!

I haven't tried their Express or Grain Free formulas yet but probably will after I am done with this batch of Original. So far the dogs are all doing very well on it and they obviously like it. I can make a large batch of it and then separate it into smaller portions and freeze it to pull out as needed. So if anyone is looking for an easy homemade food you may want to give this a try.

  • I highly recommend a long walk with the dogs while the food cools because mine are constantly asking, "Is it done yet? Are you sure it isn't done yet? I think it might be done."

  • Thanks for giving me some ideas as to what to swith my dogs raw diet up with. I like what I have read so far, I might have to try it out..

I don't have to be "cooking" anything for Gossy - she jumps around asking those same questions when I'm making anything - even when it's "my" food. :)

i stay with the same brand, good quality kibble. thats all Hope gets with maybe a raw bone and/or bits of left over meat (such as chicken) and pumpkin to have in the evening. when i was working in a grooming salon she used to get other premium kibble (samples for our customers) as "treats" - she was none the wiser and thought "yummo!" hehe and never had issues with it :) also -when we have fostered dogs she has had some of their kibble and had no issues with eating it. im pretty lucky i dont have a fussy eater :)

I was feeding my Basenji brand blue and she started getting crystals in her kidneys. With the recommendation from my pet store owner (Pet Ranch), switched to Nature's Variety Instinct RAW. Withing 2 months…all crystals are gone. Now Basenji, Rotty, and Puppy Mastiff/Pitt all get Nature's Variety. Their coats are very shiney and teeth are so white.

I have been feeding my dogs Diamond Brand Chicken and Rice small breed, according to that website it's not the greatest but not the worst. I might try the Orijen brand and see if my dogs like it, Cooper and missy will eat anything but Abby is more picky that's why I went with the diamond brand cuz she likes it and she will eat it! :)

The truth is all dry dog food has been processed and heated to death as to make it a poor food item no matter how good the ingredients are. Just look at it. That dry, crunchy pellet was actually meat, veggies, etc at one time.

We just switched to Canidae over Nutro Max. We've fed our others Nutro for years and haven't seemed to have a problem, but I'm curious how the dogs would feel if they ate a better mix. Canidae has a very good ingredient list and got a A+ rating on this list! It actually isn't noticeably more expensive per pound than the Nutro we've been getting. A 40# bag was $40. So far they gobble it up, so they must like the taste at least.
