Falconi in B/mix?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Since Anne and her brother and sister were found abandoned, no information exists about her parents… Going to have her tested for Falconi syndrome sometime soon.

However, I was just wondering... what are the chances of a Basenji mix being afflicted by it? It seems to me that unless the non-basenji parent somehow had the syndrome that she would, at very worst, inherit the genes to make her a carrier. I'm not sure though... if anyone has any info on the subject I would be interested to know.

  • If she has a non-basenji parent it is not very likely that she will have inherited Fanconi Syndrome. If she is a mix that has basenji on both sides of her pedigree then it is possible se could have inherited Fanconi Syndrome.

  • WHOA = folks - other breeds get fanconi disease (matter of fact humans do too) I have a friend who had 2 Basset Hounds with it. It is 'possible' that whatever the basenji was mixed with could have it - but less likely than 2 basenjis.

We as a breed have just done a better job - given the close relationship of our dogs - than some. I have heard of it being explored in Greyhounds and sledding breeds - I know of one Podengo that was tested. I would test - just because.

  • I agree with dmcarty, there are many more breeds that can have Fanconi, so to be sure you can/ have to test.

  • Though it is true that other breeds get the disease, since we are using a marker test and not a direct gene test, I would definately talk to the lab before spending the money. Other breeds may not have identical markers making the test an ineffective tool.

    Good point Lisa….

  • Typically I have also advised those with dogs that 'appear' to have fanconi but are not basenjis or are mixes - to also have their vet fax the labs to Steve Gontos - he seems to have a handle on the chemistry of the disease in general that is helpful to those no B people

Unfortunately for us Maia has never done well with chicken, she loves it and eats it but it gives her diarrhea and seems to mess up her over all health. We did blood work again and her liver enzymes decreased by 30% which is great! Her actual health though is not so good so that is bad. We can get her to eat which is good, but the food control is not great salmon, ham(boiled a few times to remove the salt), breaded cauliflower, Mac and cheese. Whatever we can get her to eat. It’s crazy! We have her booked with a chiropractor to check her nerve function and we are ready to get prednisone going if it is ibd. We are working closely with our vet daily, she currently is on metronidazole and amoxicillin and gabapentin. Thursday I thought we were going to lose her and she has rallied. I hate optimism as I don’t do well with a broken heart but I am hoping for the best right now. She is on 2 billion probiotic per day as well. Every bite of food I can get into her I think, ok 1 more day at least. If I have to spend all day hand feeding her, I will. She is finally sleeping and twitching a little less! She is going up and down stairs ok, not great but ok and she is no longer falling over. We are far from out of the woods but I have seen some small improvements. Thank you all for your words, encouragement, advice and stories of what you have gone through. It is tremendous to me how kind you are. Thank you for taking some time out of your day and trying to help! We so appreciate it. Mai Mai means the entire world to us and every word, suggestion, or story we take into account and thank you so much for being such a loving wonderful community. With lock down and a sick pup we feel quite overwhelmed, so thank you!

He's a boy. :) And he's neutered as of three weeks ago. He's only about 10 months old.

Thank you for all your replies. I truely appreciate learning so much about everyone on this board. Unfortunately, I don't know what the parents of my pup is due to being a rescue dog. He was found in a garbage bin, then a shelter, then a rescue, then in my life!

Thank you all so much for your posts, they truly helped me a lot. Being my first puppy, it is nice to be reaffirmed that she is just a puppy and that this is normal puppy behavior…. I will definitely continue with the training and try to be more consistent with my approaches. I truly did not think that this was aggression and I'm sorry for the misleading title post; I guess I was involving my own feelings as it has been a little frustrating to say the least. I see how the other puppies are in puppy class, and then there is little Kaya running around barking/yodeling for the entire hour - She is a little diva. Thanks again, and I look forward to continued interactions in this forum!

I agree, rawhide is bad for most dogs. I never give it to my 2.
