2009 Chicago Basenji Specialty

  • Is there somewhere online that has the results?

  • @Quercus:

Well, shoot! You should have introduced yourself! Was Roo the dog wearing a red body harness? I saw that dog behaving himself very nicely :)

Hippo is suffering from some testerone poisoning which causes him to try to take on every male dog that looks his way…ugh....I took the opportunity to do some counter conditioning with him at the show, and by the end, he was doing a little better. Luckily he LOVES people!

I wish I would have gotten a chance to meet you and Miranda in person.

Not a Red Body Harness but a Wide Red Martingale with a red leash. Miranda had a pink coat tied around her waist and I was the guy with the big white lens taking pictures and aggravating the women. (Maybe I had some testosterone posioning too!)

If we knew what Hippo looked like its possible that I might see him and you in a picture I shot that day. What color dress or pants did you have on and what color is Hippo.

    Jason

  • @Quercus:

We had a great time, Hippo managed to not be too much of a turd!! He won his class (he was the only one in it!)

It was really fun meeting Nemo, and Nicole also from the forum. Hopefully we will be able to meet more of you at other shows this year!!!

It was cool meeting you too. Hopefully we'l bump into each other again at another show…and I should have Zoni with me in the future.

    @ComicDom1:

Congrats! We were there on Saturday for the Specialty! I do have some pictures I will be posting possibly. All the people we met were very friendly. Of course we took Roo with us. We were very happy to see that his behavior was very laid back with the crowds and other dogs that were at the event. I think that part of that goes to working on socialization skills and exposure.

We also met an older gentleman who was working with the judges and had a tie with a Basenji on it. When I asked him where he got the tie he told me he has had it so long he forgot where he found it.

I would encourage anyone who own's a Basenji or who is considering being a potential Basenji Owner to attend one of the shows in the country. It is a great learning experience.

    Jason and Miranda

Good grief, I didn't make the connection when I was there. I talked to Miranda for a little while and I never caught Roo's name at the time and it maybe it would have clicked. Roo is very nice looking and he was really well behaved, very sweet too. Hope to see all of you again at another basenji function.

The show was a great learning experience for me for showing, most of the all breed shows in the area usually have only two to three basenjis at most in them, and the basenjis I saw before were really extremely well behaved. It was nice to see that a decent number of them weren't perfectly behaved, so I think there is some hope for me and Zoni. :p

Maybe that is what I saw….I saw something red :) So Hippo was the only red class dog, I think? All the others were black or tri. And I was wearing a blue dress...and we were the crazed people with the double stroller on corner of the ring. My DH Tim was sitting, reading the entire time  though he did mark most of the catalog, and give the twins some snacks :)

Were you the one in the light blue jacket with the flowers on her dress with the Red and White?

  • This is a 15 year old Veteran that was at the Show

  • What a great pic Jason…..........

  • @ComicDom1:

    Jason

That was Carrie. Andrea was wearing all blue.

Nice picture of the veteran too…I just wanted to hug that little dog, it was so sweet.

  • Here a Pic of Blade getting Judged. The handler's name is Erin and she is nationally recognized. It looks like even the judge is enjoying herself.

  • This image is of a Handler from the Champaign IL area. I probably should be spanked for this because I cannot ever remember his name.

  • I thought I would throw in one more of the Veteran who is 15 years old with the owner.

That would be Lou Dibello and Ally! :)

  • Glad everyone had fun, wish I could have been there!

  • I think I might have spoken to Andrea. I do remember a very muscular Red and White I was very impressed with near a lady in Blue. His name was Max I think.

    Jason

Nope, just a plain blue dress…no flowers :)

That is Lou DiBello (I think that is his last name?) and his bitch is a Meisterhaus dog (lots of relatives here on the fourms)

Oh, I think I remember, because you commented on his muscle! But that is Hippo…his dad is named Max...so you might have heard people talking about him :)

I just found this thread! It was great meeting you too. Hippo was such a sweet dog. He is a nice looking boy too.

@antigone said in Basenji Puppies in Qatar?: @debradownsouth I have a friend who lost 2 Austrailian Sheepdogs on a Delta Flight from LAX to JFK. Death in the Cargo Hold is more common than you think. Nope, they actually keep statistics. It is precisely as common as I think. Some Airlines treat Pets as Luggage and that is not right. So I must disagree with you regarding long Flights. The Vets recommend SEDATION for any pet that goes on a Plane. Nowhere to start with "treat as luggage" because what does that mean to you? How do you know? Is putting in cargo your idea of "treat as luggage" or is it something like abusive or uncaring? As for sedation on flying... you need new vets and to report those who tell you that. For anyone who thinks you are right, below is information based on facts: According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), sedating cats or dogs during air travel may increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. Except in unusual circumstances, veterinarians should not dispense sedatives for animals that are to be transported. https://www.avma.org/public/PetCare/Pages/Traveling-with-Your-Pet-FAQs.aspx Also ""Q: Should I tranquilize or sedate my pet for long flights? A: It is recommended that you DO NOT give tranquilizers to your pet when traveling by air because it can increase the risk of heart and respiratory problems. Short-nosed dogs and cats sometimes have even more difficulty with travel. Visit our FAQs about short-nosed dogs and air travel for more information. Airlines may require a signed statement that your pet has not been tranquilized prior to flying. According to Dr. Patricia Olsen with the American Humane Association, "An animal's natural ability to balance and maintain equilibrium is altered under sedation and when the kennel is moved, a sedated animal may not be able to brace and prevent injury.""" FDA https://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/AnimalHealthLiteracy/ucm352635.htm Sedatives: While sedatives may make your pet seem less stressed during car trips, these medications also have a tendency to dull the senses and lessen your pet’s ability to react to the environment, which can be dangerous in an emergency. When traveling by car or by plane, avoid giving your pet any type of sedative. If you think Champ or Freckles really needs a sedative to travel, talk to your pet’s veterinarian before your trip. Airlines: https://www.united.com/ual/en/us/fly/travel/animals/procedures.html United supports the American Veterinarian Medical Association’s recommendation to not accept animals that have been sedated. United will not knowingly accept a dog or cat that has been sedated and accepts no liability for the death or sickness of an animal caused by any drug. PetAir UK Q. Can I sedate my pet before they fly? No. No and No. Those clever folks in the USA did a study on deaths of animals after flying and veterinary grade sedatives were implicated in around half of them, so it is banned. Secondly, there are no drugs which will work for the full length of the journey and no-one can guarantee how they will work with the air pressure changes and if they make your pets excitable or too sedated we don’t want that to happen. https://www.petairuk.com/faq-page#t16n175 I could post more but state by state vet assoc say the same thing.

I'm so sorry. I didn't realize you had responded. I thought I'd get an email. Zoey is definately NOT good off leash. It would be great to find a fenced area…I know there is a dog park (with a small dog area) near me, but I don't know how you feel about driving. (I've commuted for years, so I'm used to it). I could probably call Bear Mountian the park to see if they allow dogs. I'm working tomorrow, but I'll try to find out on Tuesday. Also, there is some sort of an event in Woodstock, NY (beautiful town), sponsored by the Rip Van Winkle Basenji Club. I am totally new to all of this stuff, so I'm not sure what goes on there, but here is a link....I thought you might be interested. If I'm not working I may go just to check it out. http://www.rvwbasenjiclub.org/June.24th.Match.html

I haven't managed to find any Basenji's in my area and Id like to get together with some other Basenji owners and their dogs and let our dogs socialize and let us human's get to know each other. I love Basenji's and I figured it would be awesome to get them all together at a dog park or something and let them play. I figured this would be a great place to throw this idea out there since SO many members are on this site :)
