    I feed all my dogs on Royal Canin dry food. However, they do also get salmon oil, garlic tablets and some other herbal remedies mixed in. They also get raw tripe, raw lamb, raw mince beef, raw veg, raw eggs, scrambled eggs, cooked veg, cooked meat, tinned sardines etc etc. The list goes on…... It gives them a bit of variety and keeps them interested in their meals.

    I don't know if this is known, but of all the dog food manufacturers out there, Royal Canine does the most research behind their products.

    Hello there! I work at a Holistic dog bakery and food carrier so I fancy myself sort of a "specialist" in the area of canine diet.

    My suggestion: AVOID grains. While they are not necessarily harmful they definitely don't contribute anything specifically wonderful to the diet.

    There are great goods that are grain free. My two suggestions are to look into Innova's EVO line. It's my favorite food; totally grain free and outstanding protein/fat. My Shango eats it and it's done wonders for him; skin/coat, weight control, and productive energy.

    Also, Solid Gold's Barking At the Moon is a great food to look into that not many people know about. The price is fairly reasonable whereas Evo gets a bit expensive.

    Overall, holistic (no wheat, corn, soy, by-products) is the way to go. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

    Andrew, that is interesting…here in Maine, I've found Barking at the Moon to be equal or MORE expensive than Evo. All the other Solid Gold foods are cheaper, but not Barking. :rolleyes:

    I've got mine on Challenge, which is salmon & potato based. They've been on it since Christmas and I've been very pleased with the results, super coats and excellent body condition, and universally 'firm and small'! The old lady is keeping her condition very well and they all gobble it down like it's going out of fashion. It's not that expensive either, about thirty pounds for a 15 kilo bag. I have also had excellent results with imported grain free foods like Orijen and Solid Gold but the availability was erratic and the cost of shipping makes them very expensive here.

    That is QUITE interesting! Here in Indianapolis, all I've found is that EVO is much more expensive by about 5-9 dollars!

    I think signalling is a great idea, although I have never used it. A friend taught her two Bichons to do it with a bell at the door. My dogs always let me know when they needed out. We had a regular routine, but if a potty break was needed at some other time, restless pacing and trotting toward the door was a pretty clear picture. Never a problem. Worst thing is the sound of a dog beginning to retch and jumping off the bed at 4 a.m. Seldom managed to get outside quick enough!

    wow! nic memories! Here on my city my sister cant belive that people even stop theirs cars to ask "what breed is your dog"? some people get pictures with the cellphone or with their tablets so a walk with my girls on the downtown is a secure chit chat with the people. A remember 3 ladies, they were so amazing! Maca dont put so much atention on people specially girls, but those ladies was talking to Maca saying she was sooo pretty sooo sweet sooo everything and Maca start to bend those ears and make noises they were more happy and carry on and Maca more and more sweet Whilw They was saying Maca was soo sweet and bla bla and i was thinking.. ha! she is a little naughty and sometimes so dominant.. but that day Maca plays her role to perfection. She deserves a Oscar.. Other day she was confused with a male chihuahua, a lady ask if we can breed our dogs, i said, well is a SHE and is not a chihuahua, the woman start to apologize i dont care well.. i dont like Maca be confused with a male dog, but was funny at the end. But on general people use to think they are like foxies or pitbull or little deer. I said to some kids that i was ironing the tale all days to get curled. They believe it and i was worried they try to iron his own dog, so i said that noooo! that was natural and ironing a dogs tale is a ugly idea. Oh one day i lef Maca with the policeman at the bakerys door ( he was at my sight anyway) and when i was out i found the man with several people asking him if was a police dog or some kind of new police dog because looks so nice and so naughty hahha The poor man have no words and just was smiling while the people was taking picture of him and the dog. lol So the last time that i walked with my sister she was wow! i cant believe it.. the people stoped to ask what breed is.. Yes, my girls are used to some fame.. and i like they socialize with the kids.. not so much with the grown people and with so many thief getting his eyes on pure breed doggies not so nice but well… i said the are naughty some times.

    So, I've talked with Oakleys breeders and met for play date with some of their pups…things went really well, Oakley took really well to the other pups with me around, so much so I really didnt exist. One pup just clicked and fit perfectly, she would be the perfect temperament and disposition to compliment Oakley and our life...so I'm really glad I got to see what works and what doesn't...one female pup and him just couldn't click the whole time, tensions and such...the dog I originally fell for is a retired female and we tried that as well, didn't go as well- I think Oakley is too abrasive for older females to tolerate...he's a big puppy and acts like it. That cemented for me that a pup really has the best chance of working out. I learned a lot about basenji interaction and behavior, possible issues to be aware of and really just more about Oakley.. It was a very insightful visit and I feel more confident that Oakley will accept the right dog into our home, the decision is really up to me now to see if I can part with Oakley and I being two peas in a pod....still a little worried about having two and not yet having gone through the "having children" phase...the thought of eventually being pregnant with two seems more daunting than one...perhaps some insight into that would be helpful!

    Our boys don't touch human food at home, when I put my dinner at the couch next to Buana or chaufuko they won't look up… :D Also when we aren't in the room they won't steal food from the table (thank god because they should be really fat already thanks to the cats and Ryan) When it's on the floor, they will steal it :D

    I only have one boy of unknown parentage as he is an adoption but my guess is that they probably do "know" family by scent if not sight. Their differing reactions to "family" probably relates back to the "pack" mentality. A female may have two daughters that she treats completely differently due to her perception of their ability to challenge her as "alpha" female in the future. I would guess it is similar for males. Time together as a "family", as with humans, is probably also a factor. Just my thoughts.

    Andrew thanks you all for the support (this is Carrie). The unfortunate side effect is, I would rather my dogs and I avoid the park until this blows over… I don't know what this guy OR his dog look like. I always keep visual contact with my dogs, but they are often out of reach. I would hate to have this guy take out his frustration on Booger & me not be able to get to him in time. And if a guy is willing to do this to his dog, what's to stop him from hitting a woman? When I heard this story on the phone in the airport, I was shaking. I just can't believe the nerve. We've had run ins with horrible dogs at the park before, and we pick up our dog & hold him out of harm's way & yell until the other owner restrains their dog. And I am shocked Booger DIDN'T bite the guy honestly (and happy too). Booger DOES NOT like strangers touching him. He will tolerate it, but usually will grumble about it. However, kicking him & throwing him.... I'm amazed he didn't have much of a reaction at all. And very pleased because Lord knows Booger would be blamed & probably euthanized for protecting himself.
