Question About Fanconi

    Hi…I have a 9 year old Basenji with slightly elevated liver enzymes. I am familiar with Fanconi syndrome as a kidney disorder. I had the dog to the vet and he ran tests for Cushings. That was ruled out. We did blood work...the only thing outside of normal range were liver enzymes.. ALKP / 463 U/L and ALT 259 U/L. She is drinking a bit more than usual but well within the accepted normal range of 1 oz. per pound of body weight. We also did a hypo thyroid test...a little on the high side but within normal range. I had a dog with Fanconi but liver enzymes were never an issue. Does anyone have any thoughts on this situation? Could this be an early warning sign of Fanconi? I would appreciate any and all help!

    Behavioral difference depend on the dog, the age the dog is neutered and other factors. Lots of studies on the topic but mostly you avoid the heightened mating response to other dogs in heat and chance breeding. Behaviorally, effects are generally not that much otherwise.

    @agilebasenji: I have a friend who has a nonbasenji dog that was just diagnosed with Fanconi. They (owner and vet) started the dog on the Gonto's protocal. (yea!) I know there is a Fanconi list, but did not know if it was open to just Fanconi affected basenjis or if other breeds were welcome. Also, is it a yahoo group? thanks It is a yahoo group and it is open to anyone with a Fanconi affected dog, or so I have been told.

    hi there sorry to hear this but , im going through the same thing right now but my boy hasnt started showing signs yet but he tested carrier/affected, but DR.GONTO WILL TAKE THE TIME TO TALK TO YOU AND THE VETS HE IS A REAL HERO ! I HAVE TALKED TO HIM A FEW TIMES. I'M GOING TO BE EMAILING HIM THIS WEEK WITH MY BOYS VEROUS BLOOD GASSES WORK RESAULTS TO SEE WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE ON HIS FOOD OR MEDICATIONS IF ANY YET!!. AS IM KEEPING MY FINGURS CROSSED! MY BOY'S 3 NOW AND I GOT HIM TEST THANKS TO TANZA AND IVOSS THERE THE ONES THAT HAVE HELPED ME OUT OH, WAIT SHARRONHULSBUT TOO!.     @Basenjimamma: Ok, I got it. So basically the only way (as far as we know with the test available today) to get affecteds is if the "breeder" either don't test prior to breeding or breed affecteds and carriers together, and not using a clear in the mix. Right, Affecteds and Carriers and IND (between a Clear and a Carrier, so should be considered a Carrier) should only be bred to Clears, period With the very, very few inconsistant results excluded, looking at the test results, what we are seeing is what we would expect to see, especially in looking at tested sires and dams and then their offspring.

    @dmcarty: re: puppy mills and testing only one parent - I know for a FACT that at one place the sire of several years of litters was not the sire - it was a male who had good papers so his name was listed even though he was DEAD. One of the PM's males was the sire of several litters attributed to this OTHER dog. (I happen to know the person who owned the substitute sire) So it is unfortunate but the testing will only be as ethical as those who provide information to the test. Geez I hate to even say that but I am afraid that it's true. No doubt about that… and another reason to only look at AKC who has a DNA parentage program for high volume breeders...

    @sharronhurlbut: As the test is easy and doesn't hurt the dog, why not test them all? Exactly… and hopefully before the end of the summer we will have a test for Fanconi....
