  • Yes, we have having snow and cold in the PNW. I miss the rain.
    Welcome to the forums.

  • It was minus 12 here last night in Niagara Region of Ontario. Warmer than it has been though, we've been going through a cold snap as has most of USA as well.

  • Welcome to the forum and the world of basenji slaves! I was feeling bad about the weather here in WV, USA until I heard of how bad it is for some of you! I can't wait to see pictures of your little beasties!!!

  • Hello & welcome to the group. BTW - last couple of days -35C

  • Don't feel too bad, today as we are getting up to 20cm of the white stuff!!
If I can figure out how to get a album going (have tried a number of time but it's not working) there will be pictures very soon

Okay, Okay, you have us beat! But you always have us beat!! hahaha

But you can keep it, I'll let you!

By the way, are either of you people members of the BCOC? I'm looking for winter pics of our Basenjis for a contest.

  • No sorry, what kind of photos are you looking for??

  • Not a member - planning to be. Today -8c & no snowfall

  • I was looking for any winter photos from members. Playing in the snow, chasing in the snow, etc. You can always go to the BCOC website and apply, or I can send you an application and a free copy. We're always looking for new members. By the way, our BCOC Specialty is right after the Calgary Stampede this year. Hope some of you guys can make it! That's where you'll see quite a few Basenjis- not as many as the BCOA, but still, we try to get quite a few! Sally Wournos is judging this year.

Getting a dog from a responsible breeder is definitely worth the wait and the work to find. At my vet's office we are "the good basenjis". My vet actually sees several basenjis in their practice and the only ones they look forward to seeing are mine. The reason, mine have never tried to bite them, nor are mine shy about being handled, they are healthy. My vet was really upset to have a new client bring in her 8 week old basenji fresh off the airplane, it was terrified of people and had slipping patellas. My mom's vet is considered "the" basenji vet in her area. The majority of his clients have dogs bought from the internet or a local BYB. He became "the" vet because so many of his basenji clients are being treated for a variety of hereditary diseases. He was absolutely shocked when she came in with hers for their first exam. First off, that she was able to provide him with OFA information for both of her dogs plus information on the health of their parents. Secondly, because they were both in really good condition, good muscle tone, no signs of the disorders he so commonly sees. I have much the same experience with dog trainers. There are certain issues that they get used to dealing with because the pups that come to them did not receive as much early socialization. They are pleasantly suprised to see well socialized puppies with good communication skills. So what I am trying to say is that good breeding shows.

Hi, I couldn't agree more with all of you. I know that spanking my B is like shooting myself in the foot…this is why i am here - to ask for advice and help from others...UNderstand that it's something that is not done often, but i find myself more and more wanting to do it and it's a big no-no.....I live in Manitoba, Basenjis here are very few and far between, and i am lucky if the person at the pet store even knows what i am talking about. The only time he pees is after we have scolded him for something, or not allowed him to do what he wants...like when he goes to chew on something we will replace it quickly with an appropriate chew toy to re-direct his attention. He also pees when we kick the dogs off the bed or couch when they are hyper and playing, we get them to play on the floor. Basically it's when we insult him. When i come home from work if i leave the other dogs out before him, he will pee, i know he can hold it. It seems like it's his way of saying ' how dare you, ME first!" It's not that i am loud, or that he is nervous when he does it. For example Last night we were all sleeping and my partner moved and accidentally pushed Simba (my male) of the bed. Well that was it, he peed right there beside the bed. They don't sleep with us all the time, and actually more often than not they sleep in the kennel, occasionnally when we're not home much that day we will allow them to bunk with us. My eldest Basenji X was a submissive pee'er, and i was told to do the same thing. Just act like nothing, be happy and smile...ignore it because he can't control it. He doesnt do that anymore, are you tellling me to basically work along those same lines with Simba? I guess it makes sense, if he is doing it out of spite, he would eventually stop because he would start to think it doesn't bother us. hmmm..is that a light bulb?....or are you guys helping me become smarter than my basenji :P :P
