• Congo gets rashes in the summer here in Nevada. I give him benadryl and bathe him in oatmeal shampoo but neither one seem to be doing any good. :( Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.

  • Have you thought about maybe it is the food? My girl Kristii suffered off and on with all kinds of allergies that we thought for the longest time was just due to the heat, pollen, etc… turns out it was corn in her food...

  • Ditto for Charlie. He would get rashes off and on, and I always thought it was heat, or tick alrgies (Though I could never find a tick on him) untill I realized that all the food he had been eating had corn in it….hasn't had a rash since I started making sure his food was single protien single carb.

  • hi, my basenji has the same problem. she only scratches on one part of her body and now the fur is all gone. i took her to the vet last night and got given anti biotics and vitamin supplement..is this a common thing? Cos i'm pretty sure her food has corn. there's not a lot of basenji's here in aust so the vets are always vague about what the diagnosis is for basenji

  • First thing I would do is find out for sure what is in the food you are using.. and if there is corn, change the food.

  • Chance has been itching the side of his neck lately and it has been giving him a really bad rash. He just won't stop itching. Low and behold….Alex took a closer look and we found a flea!!!! AAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! GROSS

Exactly… and one flea will do it.... Be careful with your Tri Girl... it is so difficult to see/find fleas with their black and tan coats.... This hot weather that we have had over the last few days will bring out the fleas...

  • my basenji is having rashes also all over her body now she have a lot of bruiss because she keeps on scratching i brought her to the vet and they just told me its because of the matting i dont want them to do skin scraping because she's being campaigned now but maybe i'll ask them to do the test i'm being bothered by it.

What are you feeding her? If it has corn and/or wheat, that most likely is the problem…

But I don't understand your comment from the vet "matting"... what does that mean?

Also, you are not really being fair to your dog by not having the scraping done... showing should not be over the health of your girl... "and" they can scrape on the off show side....

  • yes agree, if you don't want your b to scraped. try changing the diet first. if it doesn't go away then you'll need to get scrapping done. it might be something else. when my vet scraping on her they though it could be tape worm or ring worm but it wasn't that.

  • well i the vet scraped her yesterday. its not serious like what you said she's alergic to her food so i changed her diet to solid gold now but the vet also told me to change her crate matting. thanks guys

  • Hello everyone,

My name is Hotep and I am a 2 1/2 year old Basenji. Over the past four months, I have been getting these bumps under my coat that are very annoying and cause me to itch. I have gone to the vet, but they can't tell me what the cause is. They have prescribed Hydoxyzine and it takes the bumps and itching away, but every two days they reappear. I can’t’ live on these pills and was wondering has anyone else had this same problem?
    ps.
I have had my thyroid checked, urinalysis and blood work, but no one has been able to help me

  • As noted in this thread, what is she eating?

  • Congo only gets rashes in the summer. Little tiny red bumps on the inside of his legs. Benadryl and oatmeal baths work for us and then they usually go away in the fall/winter. its usually sagebrush or the grasses and weeds we have around here. It is not his food like everybody says here. We've tried that and the vet says its just allergies to grasses.

  • Tillo also has a sort of allergie for grasses.. I wonder: is this more common in B's?

Yeast dermatitis is very common in dogs. Did they do a scrapping of the rash?

@Hana: She is 10.5 months now so we'll be thinking about transitioning at some point to an adult food. Here's a link to many of the dry foods lots of folks on this list use. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/ IMO, if you can afford the 5 star foods, go for it. Kipawa eats Taste of The Wild Bison formula and loves it! There's no grain or corn or 'meal' in it.

@Burma: they said that the vet did do a skin scraping, i dont recall them saying for mites. she eats beneful healthy radiance dry dog food-we thought that could help her skin stuff… You might want to try a better quality food and one without any grains, there are a number of them. And you should check and make sure that she was checked for mites. If you call your Vet they should have it on her records.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)
