I think that a basenji puppy and a two-year-old is a recipe for disaster for many reasons. Both require and crave lots of attention, neither one can be reasoned with, both will want to play with the same toy, both can be stubborn, and the list goes. It is far too much to expect a two-year-old to understand how to get along with any puppy, especially a basenji puppy. If your heart is set on a basenji puppy, then I think you should wait until your child is at least five or six years old.Children that age understand what you are saying about the puppy and you can explain to them why you are saying it. I agree with the person who suggested getting an older basenji or how about a puppy of another breed? t one time in my life I had a basenji and a mixed breed, and they got along beautifully.
You may love all the traits of this breed but I was suggest that you talk to owners and their experiences with the basenjis and young children. One cannot count on even the best breeders to give you the full story. Please don't get me wrong. I've had three basenjis and adored them all. I got the first one when my youngest daughter was seven. You don't have to wait that long but two years old is too young, imho. Good luck.

Hi Marilyn, sent you an e-mail about this tri-boy. Thanks, Susan

Has he been DNA tested for Fanconi? And also, if not AKC registered… the really you should consider neutering him.... While a perfect pet is great... leaving a unregistered dog in-tact and no health tested is not really responsible

Please don't place intact dogs as pets.
They can end up in puppymills…its awful for any dog...
Please fix pet dogs before rehoming them... -
Here's a little more info on our Basenji boy. We have an appointment to get him neutered next week. I am not sure about the Fanconi testing, but have the breeder's name and contact info. He was originally bought by an elderly couple who couldn't handle a young, energetic dog. They sold him to a family where one of the children broke out in a rash, apparently allergic to him. That's who we bought him from for our 24 year old daughter who now can't have a dog where she lives. We have 6 other dogs so just don't have time to give another one enough attention. We are very concerned that he goes to a good, forever home this time because he really is a good dog.
Thanks, Marilyn -
Marilyn, thank you for getting this boy fixed.
If you want some tips to make sure he goes to a good home, I can tell you how we do it in BRAT.
brescue@wavecable.com is my e-mail.
I can help you decide who had the best home for the boy. -

Thanks, MarilynThat is great that he will be neutered. As far as Fanconi testing you can check his sire and dam at www.offa.org. It the sire and dam are not there, then he should be DNA tested and you can find information about testing at www.basenjihealth.org

Marilyn, I am also in Knoxville, TN and we tried to get this boy into BRAT from the original elderly owners, but they would not release him to BRAT… sad that he had to go through sooo many homes that obviously didn't understand basenji behavior. Is he still in the Knoxville/East TN area?? Do you have Basenjis in East Tn that might like to have a playdate?? I have only run into a few Bs here and have been unable to do form a group... which I would love to do!!!

Our B went to a family in another state. They have had Bs in the past and really wanted another one. The only home that may not have understood B behavior was the first one with the elderly couple. The family we got him from wanted to keep him but had a child who was allergic. Our daughter wanted to keep him also but could not have a dog where she is living. We have 6 other dogs, and felt we could not give him the attention he deserves. We would have liked to keep him, but believe he will have a better home where he now is. Thank you for your concern.
