Hi from me and Hannah Dog!

  • Hi All,

I have what I believe to be a Basenji mix. I got Hannah from Tony La'Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation last September, and that's what they told me she was. Recently I had her DNA tested so that hopefully I could answer the question I'm always being asked – what breed is she?

Surprisingly, the test came back positive for German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd, with a little Beagle thrown in. I have a very hard time believing she is not Basenji at all because she has so many physical and behavioral traits that are Basenji-like.

Anyway, here are a couple of photos of my beautiful girl. She's about two years old and is very clean, quiet, sweet and gentle. She adores car rides, hates the water, and ignores all toys. She was born to chase squirrels - it is her greatest passion in life!

I welcome any further speculation on what mix she might be. Perhaps some of you Basenji experts will be able to tell whether she even is Basenji. I'd really like to know either way.

Hi John! My Binti will only consent to have her nails ground and only with treats (she gets one per paw.) She hated it at first but once we had the routine established, she settles right into it. The only thing I would say about using the grinder is keep pausing to feel the claw. I once had a "groomer" who was in a hurry hold the grinder to Binti's claw too long and the friction built up heat which burned her enough to make her yip. We started doing it at home after that.[image: 1609703338260-1binti-orchids1.jpg]

A tired Basenji?!!! Joking apart, I agree with the previous posts. It is really important that she doesn't get something for nothing as Wizard advises make her work for it. Welcome to the Forum to you,Teagan and the others.

Luzambo, I too had one pass last March. After that I was left with one and said once he passed, I was going to be done with dogs – too much of work and emotional strain. Yep, I was going to be free to... well, to do something. Then I found a little girl related to Brie just 2 weeks later and 6 months later I have yet another. Yes, they're a lot of work at times, but so is most everything in life. I love having them around and the house would be often boring otherwise. I'm sure Pharaoh and my Brie are hanging out in their private club looking down on us saying "what are you guys doing down there?" And with a signature like yours, I don't think you'll be waiting long. Welcome to the forum!
