Dog friendly activities in Bar Harbor Maine?

Basenji Talk
  • My boyfriend and I are going up to Bar Harbor, Maine in September. The hotel we are going to allows dogs so we are thinking about taking Colbey, our basenji. Does anyone know of any good dog friendly activities? We'll only be there for the weekend.

  • I'm from Maine…Portland, not Bar Harbor...but here are a couple of ideas.

There is the Dog & Pony Tavern...you can take your dog with you to have a drink...don't know if anyone has actually brought a pony there ;). There are the carriage trails in Acadia National Park which are amazing...not sure what restrictions there are, but I used to take my boyfriend's Jack Russell hiking there...Apatche loved it!

And there is a monthly dog newspaper from Bar Harbor that might have some other ideas...Northeast Dog News

I'm sure if you ask the inn keeper they can give you some other info…there must be a dog park as the town is super friendly to dogs! Also, it is possible that in September some beaches might be open to dogs.

  • Thanks! I'll have to look at the newspaper. I'm sure my boyfriend was imagining a nice weekend without the dog… but I'd feel guilty leaving him behind with my room mate's if it is a super dog-friendly place.

If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

Yes, Mojo is like that too Andrea. He loves to play with Auntie Sue at the shows. :) He can get a bit rough sometimes with others, but it is all in fun to him. And he has always been so gentle with puppies.

$2000.00 for astro turf!!! Wow! I've seen that short green carpet which looks like grass and that works really well. I don't think its called astro turf though since it is much shorter. You can find it at camping stores or even Home Depo. Its not really that expensive and it is easy to clean with a hose.

Sahara does the same, she will stick her head through just enough to see you and then helps you get dry by licking. She loves to help out, and will take a bath pretty easy now. Daddy also took her with him to shower and she did good. We have also taken her in our boat with a lifepreserver of course and she liked it ok. Hubby put her in the river with him and she was fine with him. Yea, they do have the sweetest personalities, and we love our Sahara sooooooo much.

@Tayda_Lenny: Hello! there is a possibility that Tayda, Lenny and I will be moving Northern California in the next few months! I noticed there are a lot of Northern Californians on the forum and I'm wondering where the really dog friendly area are. I might be working in San Jose, and would prefer to live about 1/2 hour north - maybe in Freemont/Union City/Newark area. Is this area dog friendly? Are there fenced in Dog Parks around? Hello there! I live in Cupertino and work in San Jose. Here are two websites that will tell you what dog parks, trails and even hotels you can take your B to. http://www.bahiker.com/doghikes.html http://www.wagntrain.com/dog_parks.htm
