Isis update- oh my gosh - confusing..

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • as some of you know i posted here a week or 2 ago about isis having 2 accidents in the house and freq. going at the dog park… and the testing of fanconi with strips, the vet and the family history proving she had it.

well- it seems like everything is going zero to 60! she NEVER went in the house besides those 2 times before we got her tested-- and ever since we learned she has it-- it seems she goes knows this little fact and goes in the house practically everyday since then!

almost a day or 2 after the vet she went in the house...
the night before last we discovered that she just goes in her bed at night... she doesn't even get up.. she just goes! :(

and last night she went right in front of us! (funny story to this- watching battlestar season 2 & a guy was holding a bottle upside down- spilling beer allover the floor- making the 'peeing' sound- I say that sounds just like isis peeing in her bed the night before'- and my husband screams and sees isis peeing right next to him)
you could say isis timed it just right! argh!
    :o

has anyone else had this problem? we are giving her the petcal and tabs everyday.

do the pee pads work? should we get her a diaper? we live in an apt with no porch, and my husband and i both work.... it's just a shock to go from a dog that never had a problem to this-- in such a short amt of time.

we are at a total loss.

  • It sounds like she has developed a UTI which is really common in Fanconi dogs. A vet visit is probably in order to get antibiotics to treat the UTI.

been reading other ppl's post– and it does seem a lot like UTI... we are still waiting for the results of the 1st urinary tests- would that have shown early signs of UTI? if it did i am surprised the vet hasn't called us (???)

do fanconi dogs get UTI often?

  • Because of the sugar in the urine, Fanconi dogs are prone to UTIs. They can be hard to detect, often the bacteria from the urine doesn't culture well. Many vets will treat based on symptoms which Isis is exhibiting.

thank you for the quick response and for the lesson in fanconi 101! letting my husband know that there's a reason for the 'insanity!'

    vet here we come!

  • Good luck. This disease has many aspects that are both costly and difficult for the day to day lives of the dog and owners. Please keep us posted.

Is Isis also taking Bicarb? What did her blood gas test show about the amount of damage that has already been done to the kidneys?

  • Many Fanconi dogs never show a UTI on testing. Those of us with these dogs have learned to get antibiotics whenever symptoms appear; 'accidents' in the house, lethargy, decreased appetite, sometimes apparent pain when urinating or 'hunched back'… A minimum 2 week course of Clavamox or Baytril is indicated whenever you see one or more symptoms, whether a culture shows infection or not. (The sugary urine is a perfect medium for UTIs and the kidney can wall off the infection so it doesn't show up on exam) Untreated UTI's are not only annoying for you, but can cause long term kidney damage.
So, check with your vet and hopefully get Isis on antiobiotics ASAP...

    Terry

  • Hugs to Isis… and hopefully the blood gases were done and that Dr. Gonto was able to help you and your Vet with the right protocol program for Isis....

And there is a Fanconi yahoo list for only people with affected dogs. It would really be good for you to join that list. If you seach the yahoo list for Basenjis and Fanconi you should be able to find it.

Dr. Watkins was so impressed with how well the wound looked yesterday that the cone collar is officially off now! Baron is so happy to be rid of that thing and so am I. That was his last check up. Thank you to everyone for your positive vibes, prayers, and well wishes. Basenjimamma, thank you for the tip. I will keep this in mind for any future injuries and wounds. :)

My girls keep themselves pretty clean. The first heat is usually the messiest, and even then, it isn't too bad. The place I notice it the most is if they sleep in the bed, then I recommend you get a set of DARK sheets and duvet cover ;) I don't care fore the britches, because every female I have used them on got a vaginits infection because they couldn't keep herself clean.

@Rivermoon: I had heard people were doing the blood gas tests on their "probably affected" dogs. Apache had just turned 2 when I got the results and I started strip testing him immediately. I've already told my husband when he turns 3 I'm taking him in for a blood gas test…I'm wondering if I should do it earlier. I'm still strip testing Chey too even though she came back as "probably a carrier". My feeling is that until they get the actual DNA test, I'm not taking any chances. And since the strips don't last long, no sense in them going to waste….

We had the same problem when Seti was a puppy. It turned out that he had crystals in his bladder due to the food we were giving him (I think it was Wellness brand but not entirely sure). We changed his diet and it went away and has never come back. Hopefully your problem is minor like ours!
