Basenji Park Indy???

Basenji Talk
  • What a nice yard you have, I love the trees, I'm having trees planted in my yard next month

  • @Vanessa:

<sniff>if only there were yards like that in the Bay Area.
    I miss having a yard.</sniff>

There is at my house…. and for that I am very grateful!

  • We live in an apartment so no yard…I'm envious! They are going to love that yard!!!

Funny thing, dogs seriously change you in ways that a child would. Mark & I's lease runs up in Nov & already we are looking at renting a house with a yard [if not buying] vs. getting back into an apartment solely because of Dallas. Haha.

  • Here is part of our yard.. and yes in the summer they love to "sun" on top of the SPA

  • So, so envious Pat! What a lovely yard!

  • That yard is going to be an excellent "race track" for your dogs! I miss having a yard and can't wait to get out of our rented townhouse so we can get a place that has a fenced backyard for our little guy. I always feel guilty that he can't run around at "full-tilt" because he's on a leash. (In our complex there are LOTS of bunnies and Jackpot would be gone in a flash if he wasn't on a leash!)

Can't wait to see pics when the fence is done and the dogs are running around!

I am in the exact same situation as you! I live in a duplex with no fence, and we are looking to buy a house when our lease is up just so we could have a yard with a fence for ours!

  • Hey Nexa, I am in Lebanon.
    on my way over :p

We usually go to the Eagle Creek park, but yours looks like more fun.

  • Things are beginning to look up for military folks who have dogs but no yards. I drove through a navy housing complex behind the big NEX at Pearl Harbor and they are building what will be a really awesome "Bark Park" right in the middle of the housing compound!!

  • We are in a town house with no yard, so Blaze gets stuck on a long leash. I make it up to him by taking him out to the farm every other weekend, so he runs free on a 1/4 section of land with the farm dog. He sleeps for three days when we get home.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

As an organization BRAT doesn't foster mixes, but sometimes individual members will, at their own expense. BRAT does maintain a Basenji mix adoption site, but the dogs on there are often ones belonging to other rescue organizations. Individual owners looking to place their B-mixes, I think, have to coordinate their own dogs. When I was BRAT's Basenji mix coordinator I often would coordinate the dogs, but I'm not sure if it's like that now. I know that there are certain individuals in BRAT that don't think BRAT should deal with B-mixes at all. -Joanne

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.
