Problem?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • i found this pea size lump on the side of my basenji puppy deoji…it's right behind his left shoulder and can move, almost feels like it's in the muscle...and i don't know if i just never noticed it before or if it's getting bigger because i can see where the fur kinda puffs out where it's at now (i have a hard time believing i just didn't notice it though because i pet him constantly)
any clues as to what this might be and is it a problem?

if i can tell it's getting bigger than i'm going to take him to the vet right away, but as of now it doesn't seem to bother him so i'm going to wait for his appointment 2 weeks from now for his 3rd set of shots

  • well, it could be a reaction to a shot, if the shot was given there.

it could be a microchip, if he is chipped

or it could be as simple as just a fatty tumor, that just needs to be masaged to go away

  • Fatty tumor would be unusal for a pup this age. I would bet a shot reaction

  • Could also be a swollen lymphe node. Just a sign that the immune system is hard at work.

  • my guess is just a reaction to his vaccinations. Did he get one there? It will eventually go away.

  • Dallas has the same thing & I was told it was a reaction to his recent rabies vaccination. It will go away within a few weeks.

Thank you... I wasnt sure about the food, some say too much protein, some say that protein are good for acidic urine... i will loose the vegetables for a fee days (Fred will be happy) and keep treating UTI with antibiotic and D-manoze. Kibble is a problem because he is straching his mouth and ears when eating it, That’s why we are on raw diet. He eats horse and lamb meat and he likes green peas so that was his main vegetable. I hope the problem was in the peas 😂🤣.. Thank you... we are going tomorrow on x ray to see If there are any Stones...

Really glad it is something fixable. Sometimes dogs with heart failure or cancer do that, but as he had this before, sounded like recurrence. I would ask why the different drugs... if bacterial, he needs antibiotics to clear it up. Steroids can help with allergic reaction/inflammation, but won't do squat for infection. Are they suggesting one and then the other if first doesn't work? Good luck!

oh yes hes on metacam now for pain but also because it is supposed to help with the swelling of the discs when he comes off that in a week we have to wait for a few days then we will put him on steroids to ease the swelling of the discs i guess right now the crucial thing is to make the discs go back to the size they should be so they dont infringe on the spinal cord or nerves which would be really really bad for sebastian

I will continue this topic in the FOOD FORUMS since likely this is not a health issue at this time: http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?t=7726&page=2 Thank you everyone for you comments, I am new here, and new to Basenji's so all the help is appreciated. The longer I keep little Benji confined, the more destruction he starts doing to the laundry room! :D

@etzbseder: While I've got people looking at this, my B also has a minor umbilical hernia, I was wondering, how big of an issue is it, and should I get him fixed. Do the potential problems get overweighed by the benefits? That is usually not a big deal. The majority of Basenjis are born with umbilical hernias. Should you get him fixed? As in neutered? Yes. Should you get the hernia fixed? They could do it when they neuter him if it bothers you…but it isn't a health concern unless it is quite big.
