    Okay, I am determined to have some semblance of peace here between the cats and Keoki.

    Today I took him upstairs again, on-leash and armed with cookies and a water bottle.

    The water bottle helped a lot. He was {eventually} able to sit w/in feet of the cat, glance at them, and then look at my eyes. We just sat, with him getting a small bite of chicken every time he focused on my eyes for a couple of seconds.

    The cats were sitting on dd's bed the whole time, looking evil and growling as only annoyed cats can do. Every once in a while Keoki would whine and pull toward them, which earned him a squirt with the bottle.

    Of course, to achieve that calm, he just about got a whole bath, my dd complained that her carpet was wet and that her room would smell like wet dog all day. I assured her - her room smells plenty bad already:eek: so she has no need to fear that wet smell. ;)

    Anyway, I'm thinking, if we do this every day maybe a couple of times a day….? I don't need them to be friends, I just need him to not go INSANE and want to KILL them every time he even thinks he hears them upstairs.

    Jazz was never a fan of the cats, and would chase them if they ran, but if they were sitting on top of the couch she wouldn't go after them or anything.
    She and one of the cats could sleep in the little camp chairs, side by side.

    Keoki is something else, man. I've never seen a dog with his determination! LOL
    But I am guardedly hopeful that one day, peace will reign.

    I was a little pre-occupied earlier today, and Doodle displayed her displeasure at my constant delays... how? She got up on the sofa and did this little prancing-dancing thing. Like she was saying, "haha, look at me misbehaving". LOL oh yeah.... if that is her "breaking bad", I'm in trouble, she's got my heart!

    IMO it is a myth that Basenjis cannot have good manners on a walk. Yes, great if you can do off leash, but when circumstances dictate that a leash is necessary then walking calmly without a lot of drama and pulling should be achievable. Personally I do not like long lines or flex leashes. Or allowing dogs to eat whatever they find on the ground, which can in some cases earn you a trip to the vet or worse. Like most dogs, Basenjis are not overly discriminant about what they will ingest. A short leash and being observant can protect them from unwelcome outcomes. Mental exercise will also go a long way with any dog. But one should have a definite opinion about who is running the show, and it should not be the dog....they are quite willing to take up the position should you abdicate.

    Started peeing in the crate again

    Just thought I'd share an update on this. I removed the blankets from the crate and replaced them with a mattress. We have been strict about her only staying in the crate at night. When we have had accidents I have cleaned up, with a dog urine killing spray, and placed her back in the crate. Everything is progressing smoothly, not had any accidents for over a week now. So it's been a rather quick turnaround, lovely to have her properly crate trained again. Thank you all for sharing advice on the situation.

    Both my girls will try whatever they can to get to a cat, squirrel, other dog, whatever they see that they think they can chase - the only thing I can do is keep their leash short and keep on walking. It slowly changes from pulling on their hind legs to walking with their heads turned backward to finally giving up and continuing the walk. Not a lot of fun at first though. I have tried teaching them to sit on command during the walk when there's nothing there, and turning to walk the other way so they are concentrating on which way I want to go, and other methods I've heard about, but in the end, when there's something to try to get at it's all for nothing. Mostly I pray they don't see the kitty - and it's probably not a great idea to call their attention by saying "kitty." If we are in the house and talk to our cat by saying "kitty," the girls are up and looking out windows and running form room to room to see if there's a kitty they can chase. They do know better than chasing "their" cat - and have scars on their noses from when they tried.

    @LiveWWSD: What a great Idea to reclaim some floor space. And congrats on Keoki sleeping well in his kennel for you. I have to say you are a VERY brave woman with the plastic sided kennels. CHarlie ate through two of them as a puppy before I gave up and got him an all metal kennel. :D Oh, hee hee. If the photo were closer, you'd seen the damage he's done to BOTH of them.:D Jazzy NEVER chewed her crates, but Keoki apparently couldn't be happy until they were both damaged.
