Great places to Vacation with basenjis

Basenji Talk
  • We found a wonderful place in North Carolina last spring (2006), about 10 miles south of Asheville. "Barkwells" is six fenced acres with a pond, and each cabin (had 3 when we were there, now have a total of 5) has a small fenced yard, as well as dog doors and hot tubs for the humans. If all the dogs get along, they can all be out in the big area while you are home, but if you leave the dogs home alone, they have their private yard accessable by their dog door. Really a wonderful place, we stayed on the property for a couple of days and just rested and walked around, but the Blue Ridge Parkway is only 10 miles away, and the scenery is gorgeous. Not cheap, but a real treat for us after not taking a vacation for over 10 years, as we didn't want to leave our babies behind, and not many places were "dog friendly".

We also found a nice cabin with a fenced yard in north Georgia last fall, about half the price of Barkwells, at "Above the Rest" Cabin Rental.

Now I want to travel more with my 3, am looking for great places to stay, preferably affordable!

Anyone else found any great places to stay?

  • Thanks for the info!! We went to the beach in Pt. Pleasant NJ this summer for 2 weeks. Although we were at a rented beach house there were lots of places nearby that allowed dogs AND they had a man made doggy beach Fishermans Cove Matawan, NJ about 10 min away which was fun for the furries…and they also had a real beach for dogs that you can purchase a pass to in Mantolooking Beach, NJ.

  • there is a website i found that lists pet friendly lodging by state. it seemed pretty good.. its petfriendlytravel . com

Wow, Pt Pleasant, NJ… you are bringing back memories.... used to vacation there in the summers with my family growing up and years and years... stayed like two months.... one of our favorite places to eat was the "Lobster Shanty" in Pt. Pleasant... is it still there? I was born and raised in Pa (Bucks Country)....

  • Lobster Shanty is alive & kickin! :D :D Still a great place to eat along with the Wharfside Patio & the Tiki Bar on the boardwalk..that is life :)

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

Oh Barklessdog, you are a brave person. I must now stand with you in insane-solidarity and admit I bought it too. It is awful but when you get the line "we couldn't say goodbye so we took him home" part, you know you got to help support the woman. lol
