California Dog Friendly Hotels

    Hi!
    We just came back from traveling with our two basenjis (Talker & Savannah). We went to Cambria, California and stayed at Cambria Pine Lodge in Cambria. This place was really lovely and very dog friendly. The hotel sits high above Cambria in a very woodsy area. There were lots of trails and pathways to walk your dogs and very pleasant garden settings. The rooms were nice and probably the rug could be cleaner. Our dogs came into the room and did a lot of sniffing around which tells me that they were picking up other dogs and pet stains. Savannah peed on one spot and I quickly got the spray cleaners out and worked at removing the stain. :o

    They have a nice setting for outdoor seating at their restaurant and heat lamps. Our dining experience was excellent. It was our 7th anniversary and what more of a romantic way to spend it.

    During the day we went on hikes and also drove to Paso Robles to the wineries where the wineries that we attended were dog friendly. Our two are very well behaved and quiet so they just sat and waited and sucked up all the attention they were getting.

    So if you're looking for a quick weekend stay, I would recommend the Cambria Pine Lodge in Cambria.

    We traveled down to Santa Barbara and stayed at Fess Parker. This is our second time staying at Fess Parker and although pricey, you do get a very nice room and service. I noticed that when we entered our room, the dogs only sniffed around a little and then stopped. That pretty much tells me that they really do a thorough cleaning. They also have outdoor dining and many of the places in Santa Barbara have outdoor seating and are very pet friendly. The dogs get lots of attention.

    I also was invited by some Dogster pals to meet in Santa Barbara where they took us to a very lovely trial about 10 miles from Fess Parker (15 minute drive) called Ellwood trails. This was a wide open area with not too many dogs or people. We were able to take a great walk in the late afternoon sun and really enjoy the scenery. The dogs had a blast and were totally exhausted when we got back to the hotel.

    We had a great time and really enjoyed spending our anniversary with our pups.

    Where is Cambria?

    I hope that our next duty station is in California, it sounds like it is more pet friendly there then here in Virginia. Thank you so much for the information!

    Cambria is located on the coast of California. It is north of Los Angeles and South of San Jose. Cities along the coast seem to be much more dog friendly. It's beautiful along the coast. Santa Barbara, Monterey, Carmel and Cambria are very dog friendly places to visit and very beautiful.

    In your position, where you really have to take her out a lot, I understand. And I hope her comfort continues. My point was it is situational need, not dog need to be that social. :) I have a slim chance of that having worked with my current 2, but with my incredibly dog aggressive first one, I'd have been out in a basket muzzle and warning everyone to keep their dogs away.

    If the dogs are having similar symptoms as in the previous years, they need to be treated ASAP! It is my understanding that many are developing the acquired Fanconi Syndrome and need to be put on the protocol. Many vets though do not have the equipment to do the venous blood gas test and get an accurate diagnosis. Emergency vets should have the equipment. Do not buy any dog treats that come from China and if the package does not state where it is from then do not buy it! Jennifer

    If you ship him underneath in cargo, don't forget there are temperature restrictions. Where would you transfer planes at? This summer has been hot in many cities! Please check the requirements for the airline you will be traveling on. There is usually a limit to the number of dogs allowed on board and in cargo. You will need to make a reservation for him at the time you make your own. There may be additional requirements since you are coming from Canada, you will need to check with the USDA, the CDC and the State of Massachusetts. You can find the requirements on the USDA website and it has links to each state. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/animal_welfare/pet_travel/pet_travel.shtml You need to make sure the carrier will fit under the seat so if the carrier you are considering is much larger than the large size Sherpa brand bag I doubt it will fit under the seat. I used to travel with Arnie onboard about 10 years ago before 9/11. I trained him to get in and out of the Sherpa bag and to stay in for short periods of time. He almost always laid down in it. He never made noise even when we were in first class and they served food! Most people did not even know I had a dog. I also made sure I was comfortable carrying him in the bag. I figured if the airline employees thought I was struggling with him then he was too heavy and he would not be let on the plane. He was an older pup but weighed about 18-20 lbs. Jennifer

    Hmmmm … I am flying to LA to see DH on Friday, maybe this is a sign that the dogs need to come along! LOL!

    Thanks! I'll have to look at the newspaper. I'm sure my boyfriend was imagining a nice weekend without the dog… but I'd feel guilty leaving him behind with my room mate's if it is a super dog-friendly place.

    Hollie will hide her treats and her dog food. Her favorite hiding place is under MY pillow in the bed. She has tried to hide her entire food bowl by pushing one of her plush toys with her nose in an attempt to get the toy on top of her food bowl. Why doesn't she just use her mouth to pick it up and place it on the bowl? Silly dog!
