  • Hi! I'm Emma (or oneWish) and I'm obsessed with dogs! For quite some time, I've been researching dog breeds; looking for one that would best suit my lifestyle. Then I found the Basenji! Well, what a great dog to have around!

Hopefully, I'm going to rescue a Basenji in due course (preferably this year). But for now, I'm just making sure that I now everything about the breed before taking the leap!

    :D Emma

  • oh emma, how smart of you! this forum is a great resource. basenjis require lots of patience. welcome! :)

  • That's greatof you, first of all to rescue and second to get as much info on a basenji. I think it would be a great idea for you to look at all the forums so you can see what we as B owners must do on an everyday basis and the challenges we face and of course our rewards for having them in our lives. All I do is read and ask questions so you know what to expect and how to prepare to make yourself, home, family ready to welcome such a wonderful, very energetic, beautiful dog into your life….Good luck

  • So many people make snap decisions based on the cuteness factor of puppies and never even stop and think that they should research the breed before making an impulse buy. Kudos to you for doing things the right way and also for planning to rescue!

I'm sure you've probably exhausted all the internet resources available regarding Basenjis, but, just in case you haven't seen them, here are a few to look at:

    http://www.basenjirescue.org/

    http://basenji.20m.com/

    http://www.basenjicompanions.org/

Welcome to the forum! We'll look forward to pics! :)

@abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

@Motala - That is good that you talked to Jan and glad to hear that she had not been spayed. I still think that your Vet and you should connect with Dr. Gonto about your girl's blood work and blood gas results and if he has any thoughts about it.

@basenjilovers - She is very cute, please make sure that DNA testing was done for Fanconi and PRA. And if not or you are not sure, you can get the test kits at www.ofa.org. You do the test as it is a cheek swab.
