Whole Dog Journal

Behavioral Issues
  • Don't know if many of you on this list subscribe to The Whole Dog Journal, but you should.. there are so many great articles from food to health to training…. This month is an article about resource-guarding. It is outstanding.. one of the books recommended is "Mine" by Jean Donaldson, available for about $13 at Dogwise.com

Many of us have resource-guarding problems and I would venture to bet that over 1/2 of us never even reconize it.....

Sparkle Barkle came into heat in April. Logan went nuts! I was traveling so my wife was saddled with the mayhem. Mayhem doesn't begin to describe the situation. Sparkle should be coming in again within days, I hope, and unfortunately, he won't get any love this time either. He's gonna be a massive handful for at least a MONTH. I'm not traveling this time, so it's all on me. Cross your fingers for Tri females. I want three!

@DebraDownSouth Thanks Debra, you've given me a lot to think about. I think I'll start immediately with the "leave it" training at home and then get in touch with some trainers/behaviorists in my area. I'm not expecting any miracles here but, like you said, even just learning to ignore other dogs would make such a difference.

Hey we had the same thing happen to us on this past Sat. We have taken Trixie for over a month one to two times per week. All of a sudden on Sat. Trixie got an attitude with a dog that was under our table and I had to scoop her up, she was trying to fight the dog and of course once that happened all the other dogs came over to see what was going on. I had Trixie picked up and we left quickly. She would not not stop making her lovely growling and devil noises. It scared a lot of people who were looking at me like what the HECK lady? I could not tell you what happened but we will be taking a little break from the dog park!!

I think neutering him will do the trick. Max never mounted anyone or anything after he was neutered :) Tyler, the male that I have now, was used by a backyard breeder for breeding. He was neutered at the SoCal Basenji Rescue–I think he was about 4 or 5 when that was done. I have him and his daughter (who was spayed), and I haven't seen Tyler do any mounting since I've had them (about 6 months now).
